The difference between 6 and 9 isn't much. You are still going to get O'Rourke, Gartlett, Kennedy, MacRae, Stringer. You would be happy with any of them.

Tell that to the Pies when they swapped picks 7 and 10 in 2004 and got Chris Egan instead of Jordan Lewis. It can come unstuck.

But having said that, if Martin has been identified as an elite talent and a 'must have', I'm comfortable enough with doing whatever is needed to secure his services.

What's to say Collingwood wouldn't have picked Egan anyway? They would have had a chance at John Meeson!

Lewis was one of those big bodied kids who was thought to have little upside and picked to go mid draft in phantom drafts.

Plowman in the mix at that pick too at an uneducated guess.

I agree - I remember Port offering picks 7 & 8 to Richmond for pick 3 (ended up beign Dustin Martin), and Richmond declined.

Our Martin () seems more highly rated and we only cop a 3 pick downgrade in a draft where the order after the first couple seems to be a gamble. Anything that gets a potential A+ level player to the club is a positive.

Agree with that, should get a good player at 9 anyway and a first round pick + upgrade probably needed to get the deal done for Martin.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

I would jump at this. Martin is supposedly an elite. And also any of the top 15 players in this years draft will be very very good. The theory that there's a big drop off from potential draftee 15 to 16. But the players at the back end are better than last years mob

Luckily for Collingwood they also got Chad Morrison as part of this pick downgrade and only had to part with pick 37 as well....except that West Coke used that pick to get Mark Le Cras

I actually agree with you - Martin has been clearly identified as a must have so we are being creative with our trading to secure his services as well as still keeping a top 10 selection to get more young talent to the club. I will always applaud the club for being proactive and creative when it comes to bringing in talented players to the kennel - this creativity has been sorely lacking in the last 3 trade periods.

I think the proposed trade is good thinking, and worth a role of the dice

I would want some steak knives with it in the form of a pre listed player or upgrade draft picks that GWS may not need.

Like Sedat said, I like our creative thinking.

I would try to push really hard for GWS to add in another player -- somebody like a Saad type -- and I'd be over the moon.

Re: Dogs Keen on Jack Martin in Mini Draft

Richmond or us will need to give GWS more to get that deal done. They lose Dyson & Martin in the mini draft for picks 5 & 6, doesn't seem enough for me. Richmond & us would be happy but can't see GWS being satisfied with it.

Richmond are the club that would need to add more.

                            Tom Lee perhaps.

                              Yep.

I hope we play GWS and Richmond off each other. No doubt GWS will be unhappy with Tyson/Richmond and will want to make it as difficult as possible. In this scenario, we could 'help' them out by offering pick 5 & 6 for either Martin/Anderson or Martin/Hogan. This would almost ensure the Tigers would not be able to throw up enough to secure Tyson.

On the flip side, we could perhaps demand something from Richmond (pick upgrades?) if we're to 'help' them out. Or like I posted above, getting GWS to throw in something extra is worth exploring hard too.

I think we're in the best position, personally, if we play it right.

Not quite. The AFL made it quite clear last year that GWS cannot participate in the mini draft, and that those picks are there to encourage clubs to trade players/picks to GWS for them to build a list.
