    DOMINIC SHEED

    Height: 183cm
    Weight: 82kg
    Team/Club: WA/Subiaco
    Position: Midfielder
    Player Comparison: Simon Black
    Range: 6-15

    Player Profile

Dominic Sheed took this year’s national championships by storm, before unfortunately breaking his collarbone in the fourth round of the carnival, which saw a premature end to his championships. The classy, prime mover from WA averaged 27.8 disposals in his four outings, eventually taking home the Larke Medal for Division 1′s best player award. Sheed is an incredible talent; and arguably was the best performed and well-rounded midfielder of the champs, who should be rated much higher than some are giving him credit for. Sheed is high production midfielder, easily shakes a tag, has the endurance and football smarts to run all day, and accumulates an elite number of possessions, whilst averaging 13kms a match throughout the championships. Sheed is a well-balanced midfielder; he can play as a ball-winning extractor, burrowed under the packs, laying tackles and clearing the ball from congestion, or as a free-wheeling, offensive midfielder, propelling his team forward. In attack, he kicks goals from all angles, none better than outside 50 off a step or on the run, in defence, he is cool, calm and collect and players the percentages, finding targets with ease – he is an unforgiving footballer. A super elite ball user, Sheed is damaging on either side of his body, and relishes a one on one contest when resting up forward. He’s a fantastic pressure player, makes good decisions when the heat is on, and when the whips are cracking – Sheed is at the forefront, willing his team on. Rarely ever caught with the footy, Sheed is one of – if not the most exciting prospect in this year’s draft.

    Quote

“It was a disappointing way to finish, especially with only a couple of minutes to go. But I was very happy for us to win after the siren. It’s only a collarbone, so obviously an ACL or something like that would have been a lot worse. After surgery you can get back in four weeks.” – Dom Sheed speaking positively about his injury to AFL reported Callum Twomey.
    Strengths:

Elite endurance, fierce tackler and competitior, prolific ball winner, , incredible vision and awareness, composure under pressure, kicks goals from just about anywhere on the ground, wins his own ball, elite at the stoppages where he dominates clearances, strong bodied and is a standout leader, rarely fumbles and is rarely caught, and has a strong influence on the game. Very classy and effective with the ball, damaging, hard to contain and is an elite user of the ball. Very well balanced midfielder who plays inside and outside, is calm and cool under pressure, and runs both ways. When resting up forward, he plays like dominate key forward, able to protect the drop zone and mark above his head, plays tall, and will burn you if allowed too much space. The best, and most consistent midfielder of the championships.

    Weaknesses

The only whack on Sheed is his “lack” of pace, in saying that – Sheed rarely gets caught with the football, he knows his limitations.

    National Carnvial Stats

    Round 1 - 32 disposal, 6 marks, 8 clearances and 6 inside 50′s
    Round 2 - 34 disposals, 7 marks, 9 clearances and 4 inside 50′s.
    Round 3 – 16 disposals, 4 clearances, 3 inside 50′s.
    Round 4 - 29 disposals, 6 clearances, 4 inside 50′s and 4 goals
    Averaged 27.8 disposals, 4 marks, 4 tackles, 5 clearnaces and 5 inside 50′s
    Honours

    Larke Medalist 2013
    All Australian 2013

      Re: 2013 draft watch

      And from the same site....

      JOSH KELLY

      Height: 182cms
      Weight: 73kg
      Team/Club: Vic Metro/Sandringham/East Brighton
      Position: Midfield
      Player Comparision: Ryan Griffen
      Draft Range: 2-5

      Player Profile

Josh Kelly was initially strongly considered to be taken as a mini-draft selection in 2012, however was ultimately over-looked – not that it did any harm to his output in 2013. Kelly has had an outstanding TAC Cup and National Championships campaign this year, underlining why he is expected to be taken with pick 2 overall come November. Kelly is a massive accumulator of the footy, has elite awareness, teriffic vision in traffic, and Kelly’s efficient ball use saw him finish inside the top 1% of all players to take part in this year’s National Championships. Kelly also has a fantastic pedigree, his father Phil played 61 games with North Melbourne, and was a two-time Sandover Medalist in the WAFL. Kelly is all class, although he has a light frame, his ability to look motionless through traffic, as if he has all the time in the world, is akin to similar traits of Scott Pendlebury – he is a smooth mover. Kelly is the type of player his teammates look to get the ball to, his ability to find targets on his left foot with ease, is as uncanny as it is natural. Kelly’s elite endurance explains why he gets to so many contests and in return, a lot of the ball. He goes all day, runs both ways and is such a hard worker and can make an immediate impact in 2014 – the likes of the Melbourne, Western Bulldogs and St Kilda will be strongly considering him should he be avaliable come their first pick.

      Quote

“It’s just a totally clean slate. It doesn’t matter what I’ve done in my footy so far last year. This year is totally new. You’ve got to start again, you’ve got to build up the way you play and you’ve got to get reselected in teams. There’s no guarantees this year.I want to keep improving. I’m not complacent with how I played last year and how I went for Dragons, Metro and for my school team. I just want to keep improving everywhere I play footy.”

      - Josh Kelly

“His football ability had been obvious throughout the year. That ability to make great decisions, use the ball well, be courageous. He looked a real footballer. But what we saw at the time-trial was a superb first-choice athlete. He moved like a beautiful runner…had the bounce, acceleration and then the ability to stick and keep going at that speed. I hadn’t seen that aspect of him before. It probably explains why he gets so much footy.”

      - Kevin Sheehan, the AFL’s national talent manager.

      Strengths

Elite runner, prolific ball winner, clean ball user, elite awareness and vision, goal kicker, runs both ways, fierce tackler and delivery inside 50 is also elite. Field kicking is the hallmark of his game, can change moementum of games, composure under pressure beyond his years, strong hands in the air, clean hands at ground level, quick decision maker under pressure, attacks a lot of the football on the outside, makes things happen when he has possession, a play maker and incredibly hard to tag due to his arobic capacity. Fantastic burst of speed, is number one in this years draft crops for the 3km time trial and repeated springs – Kelly is an absolutle freak of an athlete. Very diciplined in his post-game routine (ice baths, warm downs, compression tights, writes down game notes) – Kelly is the ultimate professional. Also engaged a spring coach during the offseason to help take his repeated sprinting up a notch.

      Weaknesses

Kelly is very much an outside midfielder, doesn’t overly win a lot of contested football and prefers to play outside of the packs where he’s fed the ball.

      National Carnival Stats

      Round 2 – 26 disposals, 7 marks, 4 inside 50′s and 5 goal assists
      Round 3 - 30 disposals, 6 clearances, 6 tackles and 4 inside 50’s.
      Round 4 - 28 disposals, 7 marks, 4 clearances, 4 inside 50 and 1 goal
      Round 5 - 24 disposals, 4 marks and 6 tackles.
Averaged 27 possessions for Vic Metro in four games
      Honours

Fastest 3km time trial at the 2012 National Draft Combine (9.48 seconds) as an underage player
Ran an 800m spring in 1.56 (could qualify for the Commonwealth Games)

I've heard that about Kelly - being light on. But Aish is actually lighter and the same height so why doesnt he get the same conern?

          Kelly for mine.

Boyd, Aish and Scharnberg all top 3. This is my pick 4, if there's no surprises.

Emma Quayle: (on Kelly) Gets the ball. A lot. Reliable, hard working, hard running and skilful. Will play a lot of AFL games.

To be honest i think those 4 are all top players. I'd really like to know from others what the knock on Kelly is and why the other 3 are clear standouts from the rest.

I think Boyd will be 1 to GWS and Scharenburg at 3 to Saints. Whoever Melbourne takes out of Kelly/Aish, we will get the other which doesnt bother me at all from what i have read.

I've just read a few reviews and PDs. Kelly is going at pick 3 in several.

For mine the clear top 4 is Boyd, Aish, Scharenburg and Kelly (in no particular order). I wont be unhappy with any of those 4 at all.

Anyone know why Sheed would be rated so low in the draft (late teens)???? Im really curious as his ratings/stats/performances have been amazing and i would consider top 5 even top 3, from what ive heard. Am i missing something?

When was the last time we had brothers running around for us? They're rated a fair way behind each other - draft-wise.

Aish 'looks' more compact - physically built, but slightly shorter, whereby Kelly appears taller, but more undeveloped around the arms and chest.

Not sure, I'm very confident on him becoming a really good inside/outside midfielder in time and could certainly play off a flank next season. I rate Kelly slightly lower because I'm not sure he's quite as "complete" but can definitely see the appeal of us going for him (and him being rated by most in the top 3 or 4).

As for comparisons on Aish and Kelly and their size, I think the comfort with Aish is he is now in his second year of senior footy, playing against men. He has also played senior finals footy. It's a big thing for mine.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

I don't think it's a knock on Sheed per se. I think it's an acknowledgement there maybe 10 (at most) even better players this draft. I'd love him at the club, but I'd have kittens for Boyd and do cartwheels down at the WO for Kelly. After all the article above ranks Kelly with Ryan Griffen. Imagine two Griffs getting around our side

                          Shifter:

                          Josh Kelly
                          Sandringham Dragons, 182cm, 73kg, 12/2/95
Talented left-footed midfielder who was close to being mini-drafted last year. Kelly is composed with the ball and uses it well, and shone at last year's championships against players older and bigger than him. Can run all day, which complements his other traits.

                          Emma Quayle:

(on Kelly) Gets the ball. A lot. Reliable, hard working, hard running and skilful. Will play a lot of AFL games.

(On Kelly) At the moment he is most comfortable as an outside midfielder, and that's where he racked up an average of 27 possessions for Vic Metro in four games. One of the best players of the carnival. It wouldn't surprise if Kelly is a top three pick come November.

Reading up on Kelly actually stengthens my view on not trading for Tom Boyd. If the ladder stays as is, we should land a very very good footballer.
