The media loves a "gonna be the next Tony Lockett" story and there isn't one. Bunch of skilled kids in the top 20-30 but no one obvious they can currently build a "get this kid or your club will never win a flag" story. Admittedly noone has come out and had a dominant champs but I think it speaks more to the evenness of talent rather than lack of talent. Still glad we had 3 picks early in the '12 draft as opposed to this one though.

This, it's just going to make recruiters work a little harder at the pointy end. Brad Johnson just put up Patty McCartin's price on the TV just now, saying he's got the best hands he has seen since being involved with the draft kids.

Terry Wallace said yesterday in his opinion Petracca is the best player in the draft at this stage.

If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.

Hard to predict this early. McCartin and Petracca would be two of them.

The list Twoomey has put forward is a good one, most clubs would be interested in Darcy Moore and Isaac Heeney but they will go to the Pies and Swans. Wright and Brayshaw would be close

                    Re: 2014 draft watch

I have been thinking about this more and more, and this draft just doesn't seem to have the same level of dominant players we have been spoilt with previously. We have to go with best available with our pick (say 5-6), but that may not necessarily be a KPP.

If we do want to have a serious crack at getting a Patton/Boyd/Sam Day/Cameron, I think we need to package a deal together.

Something like Pick 5, Dahlhaus and Higgins plus a swap of our 2nd round for their third round might do the trick. I know Higgins is an FA and Dahlhaus is much loved, but we could potentially package higgins/his compo pick in. re: Dahlhaus, we do have a plethora of smalls coming through and need to unload someone. I am absolutely happy for him to stay, but I think might be the type of deal we need to put in front of them to get them thinking.

Something else they might consider might be like Pick 5, Wood + Picken. I don't think we would be as keen to do that deal though.

If we aren't going for a trade like the above, we will have to go best available, and will in all likelihood end up with another midfielder (Pickett, Brayshaw, Petracca) or half back flanker (LaVerde, Lever)

If we wanted to target that next rung, like a McCarthy, Jaksch, Tomlinson, then I think we could get away with less.

This is the guy gloating that Tambling and Deledio were the best two from that draft?

Anyways, I would not be adverse to trading our 1st pick for a proven talented key forward. We have the pick, we have the cap, and we have the need.

Wallace might well Have been right skill wise, but if you aren't 100% on dedication and improving on your weaknesses you will fall away pretty quick.
The thing about Tambling was he had great skill but when tagged he didn't have any idea. Also his build was never good for AFL.
We see plenty of high draft picks that come to nothing.
I'm not racist but how many I look at the games from the Northern Territory and its all free running tall lanky players who have no idea on defenders or getting tagged and hit by bigger bodies. But wow the skill they have is unbelievable.
Taking 18 year olds is always a risk, it's hard enough moving away from family that young.
I think in the recent years of the draft recruiters are more looking to family background and will to succeed and if they are capable of the hardness.
Only need to go back a few years and a lot if clubs didn't have the money to check out the psych of kids so they went on skill they saw.

                            Re: 2014 draft watch

It's just played different up there, probably better really as they just want to kick goals and win, not base the game on stopping the opposition from scoring, all aborigines have that awesome flair but aren't taught the defensive side ..
I'm probably racist the opposite way I hate the way the defensive side has taken over from the actuall meaning of the game which is to score more goals.
Rather watch that game up there than the one down here at the moment.
Is that racist because its a positive look at the way the indigenous play the game ?
