Ahern really came along in that bracket of games didn't he. Real goal kicking mid down in the future. Caleb Daniels would fit in your pocket. Has all the hardness, ability to read the play and running of a seasoned player. One tool he obviously doesn't have is the height. Made the AA team but i can't see any team using a pick on him until very very late in the draft, or most likely the rookie draft. Could be a real Libba Snr story.

Ahern has vision and balance much like Webb but they both played in flashes a little. I thought most of the big guys were pretty average in the televised games.

        Re: 2014 draft watch

Following on from yesterday, I noticed the GWS players really had some speed which made our midfielders look like plodders.

I think we need to target some players with speed in the midfield.

          Emma Quayle's prediction:

Bulldogs' prospect Zaine Cordy may be worth a second or third round pick, while Jayden Foster looms as a late or rookie selection.

My oath they did. They were faster than us all over the ground. We need some serious speed. I would be looking at Garlett despite his history of poor discipline. Truth is, he's never done anything too seriously wrong, and I'd back Macka and our leadership group to get the best out of him.

On the flip side, if we don't turn over the footy, pace doesn't play as great of a role as it did during the year.

                Dayle Garlett?

He was drafted by Hawthorn last year and quit before they even got to round 1 of his first season.

I assume he means Jeff from Carlton. Well I hope that's who DD means.

Hardly helps our spread though, the blokes never got further than 60 metres from goal

Yes I was referring to the Carlton Garlett. He's definitely up for trade.

Pace is only half the issue. The way you set up around the ground plays a part as well and this is what we seem to get wrong time after time.

Ruckmen named for combine - link

The AFL has announced the final group of players that will attend the 2014 NAB AFL Draft Combine in October.

The ruckmen group comprises of 11 players including two prospects identified at the AFL's International Combine held in Los Angeles in April.

AFL national and international talent manager Kevin Sheehan said: "It's extremely exciting for our code to have two further potential players from the USA in Marvin Baynham and Evan Bruinsma at our Draft Combine joining nine other promising players from around Australia in the ruckmen category. With Eric Wallace (North Melbourne), Jason Holmes (St Kilda) and Patrick Mitchell (Sydney Swans) already listed and developing their craft in state leagues along with Collingwood signing Mason Cox earlier this year, a 211.4 cm prospect from Oklahoma State, we are beginning to develop a niche pathway for extremely tall and athletic potential ruckmen or tall defenders into AFL."

The 2014 NAB AFL Draft Combine will be held in Melbourne at Etihad Stadium from Tuesday September 30 to Friday October 3 with 101 prospects under the scrutiny of the 18 AFL clubs.

State Combines will also be held in Melbourne (October 4), Adelaide (October 11) and Perth (October 12).
