    Re: 2014 draft watch

This might be worth a read. Surprisingly, she has Marchbank at pick 5.

As a defender I'd liken Marchbank to Sydney's Alex Johnson

That list has been heavily adjusted for championships performances. I will be very surprised if Marchbank goes before Pickett
If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.

My thoughts aswell gogriff. I'd expect the phantoms/mock drafts to normalise over the coming months to reflect the most consistent performers, rather than a short sighted rejuggled based on the championships.

          Re: 2014 draft watch

Would anyone consider swapping our early first round pick for 2 slightly later first round picks?

Could be a good year to strongly consider it given were likely to miss out on the couple of genuine stand outs and we could grab 2 pretty good players in what looks a pretty even first 25 or so.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Its an interesting proposition Griff and for mine, ultimately depends on what those two picks are. I feel like there is no real dominant players in this years group, but still do feel that the top tier talent lies in the top 10.

Given we are likely to have a pick around 5-6 and the make up of this draft, I'd be surprised if we would get another pick inside the top 10. Pick 5 might wring us pick 12 and 16 for example, but I don't really envision us getting a pick inside the top 10 and another between 10-20 for our first rounder.

Because of that, I'd prefer to stay with our pick 5 or package it up with some players for a dominant KPF. The evenness of the top tier in this draft (in terms of field positions) means we are likely to have options of KPP's, rebounding defenders, speedy and skilled midfielders open to us with our first pick.

If it's a good year to do it, will any other team facilitate our request?

WCE seem the only team who trade picks for picks (they've done it with us and Collingwood in the past).

                    Re: 2014 draft watch

Just think Marchbank is more of a sure thing than Pickett. Versatile - forward or back or mid, left footer, good overhead. Pickett's highlight tape is out of this world but there needs to be more to a player than what they do in their best moments.

Pickett is a great kid, will work hard on the track/in the gym but good luck predicting what kind of senior footballer he will become. Does anyone even know where he will PLAY at senior level?

                      Re: 2014 draft watch

Take this with a grain of salt because I see nothing of these kids outside the televised under 18's game but I would happily give a top 5 pick for Weller from Queensland. Outside of Caleb Daniel (who looked like a miniature, helmeted Ben Cousins) he was the midfielder that really stood out for me. Won the ball on the inside and moved beautifully in traffic, has that nice burst speed that is so damaging as a midfielder but when he got outside the contest and was fed the ball his right foot is excellent - low and hard trajectory and I don't remember him missing a target.

Keep in mind that is all based off the one time I've seen him in the game against NSW/ACT and even then he didn't get a heap of it but what he did screamed class.

What are the more educated under 18 followers thoughts?

In the last two years we've gone for the late season riser (MacRae & Bonts). Both are difficult sizes to match up on. IMO we'll probably weigh the rest of the season heavily on the main 20 or so realistic targets to date at our theoretical pick.

Haven't watched any of the QLD game as yet, so can't comment on Weller, but regarding Daniel, he controlled that first game of the late June/July televised period. I just don't think we need anymore coffee tables running around as we already have a plethora on the list.

FWIW, Neely, Stretch and Neal-Bullen all played League with Glenelg on the weekend, Neal-Bullen and Stretch both featured high in the best players

Jayden Laverde appears to be a late mover from western jets. Had a great carnival, real athletic tall type. Could be this years come-from-nowhere into the top 5-10 player

                              Re: 2014 draft watch

It’s sometimes hard to remain objective when watching potential draftees. Something catches your eye once, maybe twice, you continue to watch others, but your mind is drawn specifically to the player you noticed again and again. Conversely it’s precisely that quality that may cloud your limbic/subjective opinion regarding a player. Watching a player week-in, week-out, making sure they repeatedly tick the boxes can become almost mechanical and perhaps impinge on what our great game is really about at junior levels; the ability to do the unexpected, to develop their niches in the future.

It’s these characteristics that I believe clubs look for, or should look for, when judging the 30-35 and onwards players.

                              Two that I’ve ‘noticed’ are:

Erin Wasley-Black for NT: EWB was a major part of last years NT side that didn’t have a single draftee. He’s just under 190cm, plays (kicking, body build, run and disposal) in the vein of a cross between Bontempelli & Birchall. He gets from contest to contest with ease. Putting the objective hat on, he is in a side that has shocking disposal and poise, so it could be interpreted as mole-hill on a prairie, but he’s genuinely does have a raking left foot and much improved disposal as a 19 year old.

Lukas Webb from Vic Country: One of the games during the June/July championship he had a 4 goal game, with his early influence not dissimilar to Dom Sheeds’ effort in the 2013 championship in the game he hurt his shoulder in. He faded out in the second half of this game possibly due to more attention, but his pin-point passing into the forwardline, general positioning and running to create and kick goals was a feature.

With this in mind, who are the players you’ve seen from the Championships and onwards who’ve caught your eye and aren’t the darlings of the early draft fraternity and their followers?
