Re: SEN new line-up for 2016/17

So SEN's idea of a refresh is to move hosts to different time slots? Wonderful.

It's the same recycled tripe over and over. I dare say listeners want fresh material and voices.

It's actually just putting the owners of the station on more.

Gerard Whateley has quit the ABC and will host the morning show on SEN (9-12), will also be the chief footy caller.

        He's a good get.

Not happy with losing him on 774.

Absolutely. Lifts their cred markedly. Also will make what was a pretty good match broadcast crew better.

Fantastic addition to SEN. AS BAD mentioned a huge loss for 774.

SEN have become impossible to listen to of late. A few days back it was Kevin Hillier with his guest being Brian Mannix. Brian Mannix has zero talent and shouldn't be near a sports channel.

It will be good move if SEN can improve their content .
Far too much footy, and they need to cover more sport

Massive get. Easily one of the best in the business. It beggars belief that Fox Footy don't put him behind the mic on match day.

They've got the right bloke on board if they want to cover more sport.

Putting aside his fantastic sports knowledge, he's a superb broadcaster. You could put him on a radio show covering any topic and he'd excel at it.

I'm guessing with a young family Gerrard might be reluctant to join TV footy broadcast due to the necessity to travel more frequently. Just a guess as otherwise I'm really not sure why he wouldn't be a part of Foxtel's TV match team.

I heard that too. I think it was in the car on Christmas Day driving to my mum's place. In fact I was driving down Roberts st in West Footscray heading toward the intersection of Geelong/Somerville/Roberts st.

I'm not a big Kevin Hillier fan (even though he's a bulldog supporter! he's got huge tickets on himself and he not that good) but him and Mannix together were very poor.

Mannix knew a bit more about sport than I thought he did though.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Really enjoy and respect Gerard Whateley. He is articulate, intelligent and knowledgeable. Can't really see how he fits into the SEN culture Spewing that he's left the ABC!

I think the ABC will be fine finding an articulate sporting savant like Gerard but like you I don't see him fitting into the blokes culture at SEN. I was going to point out that a pairing of Gerard and David Schartz (WOOOOH! THATS THE MOST AMAZING THING IVE SEEN IN THE LAST 2 MINUTES AND IM GOUNG TO YELL AS LOUD AS I CAN BECAUSE I CONFUSE NOISE WITH EXCITEMENT) would be, ummm, original, but I've just remembered that SEN classily showed the Ox the door just before Christmas.

I think I will wait to hear how Whateley settles in before I change my listening habits. I'm really annoyed with SEN and the amount of ads they play ATM. If they can manage to fit more program and less ads I might go back.

Craig Hutchison to be biggest shareholder in SEN in Crocmedia deal

The transformation of Melbourne sports radio station SEN is almost complete, with Craig Hutchison to be majority shareholder and chief executive.

In documents lodged with the Australian Stock Exchange, Pacific Star Network, the owner of SEN, confirmed it had acquired 100 per cent of equity in Crocmedia.

Hutchison, the one-time leading AFL journalist who established Crocmedia in 2006, will be chief executive and managing director and also join the board. The documents reveal he will enjoy an annual salary of $883,752 and also hold 49.4 million shares worth at least $12 million.

Crocmedia is the "master rights" holder in the AFL's latest six-year radio rights deal.

"To join forces as one company with a single vision of a fully integrated sports content and entertainment business is incredibly exciting. We look forward to growing even further nationally and beyond and being the best place to connect fans to stars, and brands to fans," Hutchison said.

The merger is subject to shareholder approval at a general meeting in March but it appears almost certain the deal will be ratified.

Hutchison will be the biggest shareholder with 24.4 per cent, Viburnum Funds has 23.1 per cent, the Rothfield family has 13.3 per cent, Donald David Hall 9.9 per cent, the Herszberg family 4.7 per cent, entities associated with Fairfax Media 3.9 per cent, with other Crocmedia shareholders 9.5 per cent.

There has been a shake-up of on-air talent in the past month, with the poaching of Gerard Whateley from the ABC to be morning host the biggest move. Drive show hosts David Schwarz and Mark Allen did not have their contracts renewed. More announcements are expected this week.

Craig Coleman, the chairman of Pacific Star, is also the executive chairman of the Perth-based Viburnum Funds, which will take an $8.25 million investment in the merged entity.

Coleman said the merger would be "transformational for PNW which, if approved, would create a compelling platform for future growth".

Pacific Star will raise $10 million from the placement of 40 million new shares to wipe out existing debt. The merged company is expected to have annual revenue of $48 million and pre-tax earnings of about $10 million.
