Victorian health authorities have identified more than 10,000 people connected to positive coronavirus cases, sparking fears a cluster of 26 infections could explode.

The state will be plunged into a seven-day lockdown from 11.59pm tonight as health officials aim to stop the spread.

But Acting Premier James Merlino revealed a sobering number in his address to the media this afternoon - that more than 10,000 primary and secondary contacts would "need to either quarantine or test and isolate".

"That number will continue to grow and change," he said.

It's easy to take pot shots at the contract tracing team after some of the past failures but this must be a huge task at present given the number of exposure sites and massive number of potential contacts. I don't envy them.

It's easy to take pot shots at the contract tracing team after some of the past failures but this must be a huge task at present given the number of exposure sites and massive number of potential contacts. I don't envy them.

Certainly a difficult task made harder by the failure to correctly trace all from the initial case, where they had the wrong Woolies store.

Policy is only as good as the compliance. You have people symptomatic wandering around for days in the community not getting tested, there's not much you can do.

On a side note why is it whenever I type or say symptomatic Grease Lightning plays in my mind like the ultimate unkillable ear worm.

Misinformation. They checked the banking slips and there was no indication it was North Epping or Epping. In the end no effect.

That is a rubbish answer. To say there is no effect is just wrong. The failures allowed a wider community exposure.

There would be no ambiguity if the check in and contract tracing was efficient.

Every other state (regardless of political leaning) has done significantly better in this regard.

there are no issues with contact tracing in Vic.

No one checks in at Supermarkets.

Contact tracing is only as good as the people complying with checking in.

Last week the contact traces tracked down 15000 people in just a day or so. They have done a huge job.

Couldn't agree more they are doing as well as can be expected.
If people don't get tested what chance do you have?

I can tell you a family member was at a tier 1 site, they have been visited daily since being forced into quarantine to ensure they're home.

Having said that, working with people across Australia daily we have been slow to move to a unified QR system as some states have had that for a while.

The IT systems in Victoria are not very good, especially in Health department. It will take years to rectify.
