I'd suggest there will be a 15 man squad for the tour of India.
I know it's early days but I suspect the squad will have 7 batsman, 1 wicket keeper, 3 spin bowlers and 4 paceman.
There may be an all rounder or 2 as well.
The locks for me are:
Warner and Renshaw at the top of the order
Khawaja, Smith and Handscomb at batting positions 3 to 5
Starc, Hazlewood and Bird for the pace bowlers spots
Lyon as the main spin bowler
To me that's 9 players locked.
3 players are close to sure things:
Wade will probably get the keepers spot but I would take Nevill
I think they will pick O'Keefe because he can keep it tight but I would put Agar ahead of him.
Shaun Marsh would almost be a lock as he can bat in a number of positions and is good against spin.
So that is 12 players almost certain to be selected.
The combination of the last 3 spots is harder to pick
I think there is a need for 2 more bowlers with one as a paceman and one as a spin bowler and of course one more batsman. Of course we could look to a few players regarded all rounders because with the likely oppressive heat a 5th bowler could be handy.
Players in contention include, Travis Head with his handy offies although he is primarily a batsman, Mitch Marsh who is a great 5th bowler but an uncertain 6th batsman. Hilton Cartwright looks to be a decent batsman and just a handy bowler but there must be a question mark if he ready for a tough tour on difficult conditions. Ashton Agar is a bowling all rounder and talk of him batting at 7 to me is premature but he would give us a lot of batting depth if he was in at number 8. Glenn Maxwell should at least be in the discussion as the number 6 batsman and potential 3rd spinner
Genuine bowlers to consider include Mitchell Swepson who is an emerging leg spinner. Fawed Ahmed probably has the right temperament even if the Indian batsman went after him. Chadd Sayers with medium pacers and his accuracy could considered as the 4th paceman spot as could Pat Cummins if he was used sparingly. Tremain might be in the mix as well.
Batsman consist of Maddinson, Patterson and perhaps a bolter could be Ashton Turner who has been in good form with the bat in first class games this summer and is a decent off spinner.
Have I missed anyone?
Would you like to throw up a 15 or even a 16 man squad for discussion?
