I think if we're picking Watson, then it's an acknowledgement that Arty is unlikely to be a consistent AFL player.

      Could he play wing instead?

        Hi Comrade
Here is some detail from ESPN Power Rankings

        Nick Watson (9)Eastern Ranges/Vic Metro
        FWD, 170cm, 66kg
Talent League: 9 games, 20.0 disposals, 1.1 goals

An excitement machine in the forward half, Watson has a bag of tricks as a small forward and has produced highlight after highlight over the years. He can play above his height in the air, pounces on loose balls at ground level and makes you pay on the scoreboard. Watson hasn't shown he can move through the midfield, and it's difficult to succeed at senior level at his height, but clubs won't be concerned about his outlook as a small forward in the AFL.

Pretty sure MJP has said he’s got elite endurance as a winger and played his junior footy there. Speed and endurance on a wing would be nice.

He looked great there at VFL level. I'm not giving up on Arty yet he has AFL attributes there is no doubt about it.

I guess if we have Cody, Charlie & The Wiz as the three smalls, with resting Bont & Adz and with Aaron, JUH, Lobb, Darcy, resting English - we can put players permanently in their natural position or positions they played as juniors:

                West - Mid
                Arty - Wing
                Scott - Mid/Wing
                Garcia - Mid
                VDM - HBF
                McNeil (if retained) - Mid
                JJ - stays at HBF

None of the stop gap nonsense anymore. They succeed in their best spots or they move on.

I think we tend towards 'best available' with our first pick anyway.
Arty played a lot of junior footy on the wing, but we did just extend Scott & Poulter & Baker....

Arty seems physically immature too so as a small running type could well be a late bloomer.

I really can't see Garcia, VDM or McNeil making it.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

Agreed. But they can at least fail honourably instead of wondering what their careers might have been if not forced into unsuitable roles.

I agree 100% but we can't stuff Elephants into minis.

Yep, I get that and I do agree that we need to get a bit more ruthless with our ambition and execution.

What do you think of McNeil as a tagger or back pocket?

Worth a trial over summer. His good kicking is what limits him but the more straight forward running out of the back line might be something worth considering. He could get more of the ball as well. I think his field kicking is quite sound.

He needs to be promoted or delisted from the rookie list. I wouldn’t promote him. But I suspect the club will. We don’t tag, but the back pocket isn’t a bad suggestion. He’s not a good forward and he’s not quick enough as a mid. If we can bulk our forward line with forwards and our midfield depth, maybe back pocket is his best chance to make it. But I have my doubts outright about him. But I suspect if our draft number is only 2 or 3, he might get upgraded for a season. So maybe make the move and train him with Duryea and hope for the best.
