    Re: Early Trade Rumours 2023

Any interest in Junior Macrae? Probably would be in the same position for us as he is at Collingwood with midfield opportunities hard to come by but could be a Libba replacement in time?

    Clubs circling Macrae

Rival AFL clubs are ramping up the chase for out-of-favour Collingwood midfielder Finlay Macrae as the Magpies chances of retaining him beyond this year remain on knife edge.

It is understood Macrae, 21, could have several suitors during the 2023 trade period, despite being contracted to the Magpies for next season and being considered a required player.

The hard-nosed inside mid has dominated at VFL level this season, including a recent 38-disposal, nine clearance game, but Collingwood?s midfield dominance has meant he has yet to play a senior game this season.

He has only played 11 matches in his three seasons at the club, since being chosen as pick 20 in the 2020 national draft - two selections ahead of Ollie Henry, who requested a trade to Geelong last year.

Coach Craig McRae said last week he was keen to provide rewards for his outstanding state league form, but Collingwood?s ample supply of inside mids has consistently kept him out of the side.

McRae said he was spending extra time with Macrae during the week, knowing the frustration the young player must be feeling at being out of the AFL side.

Macrae has played 12 VFL games this season and is averaging 26 disposals, five clearances and 106 rankings points.

Macrae probably not getting his chances because Lipinski is ahead of him. He needs to move to another club but I haven't seen enough of him to say if it should be us.

Seems a nice player. Not sure where he plays with Bont, Libba, Treloar, Macrae, Daniel & Smith (assuming West & Garcia don’t get a chance to play mid minutes).

The one I heard This morning is Smith to Geelong on a $600,000.00 players contract and a salesman's job at Cotton On on $600,000.00 (Note to AFL or ATO monitors: Amounts not confirmed)

For what it's worth I wouldn't be listening to or putting much weight on that sort of speculation about Smith.

I'm pretty sure those type of Chris Judd Visy deals went out the window years ago. No way teams would risk something as blatant as that. Baz already makes good (legitimate) money from Cotton on anyway.

Such cynicism in one so young. An impeccable source. A bloke who knows the father of a club employee, Cotton On is a Geelong sponsor and Smith's manager is Paul Connors, Geelong fanatic. Join the dots.

I first posted light heartedly and for a bit of a laugh. I've started joining dots, now.

I do appreciate the explanation and the dots make it interesting but I'm just not willing to give it a lot of oxygen at the moment.

I suspect it's not disappeared but is better managed, more than happy to be proved wrong. Restraint of Trade. It used to be an issue the AFL leaned over backwards to avoid, that the Salary Cap would fall in a Federal Court challenge, perhaps still is.

Preface: All below information comes from another clubs recruiter + someone I know who works at the Dogs. Grain of salt, as always.

-B Smith - Club doesn't intent to let him go, he doesn't plan to go, it's all media bullshit because his having a down period.
-Tenglish - Real belief in the recruitment field that he'll be at WCE next season, my recruitment contact believes a ''Buddy like'' offer of several mill over 5 years has been put to him from WCE, alot of clubs waiting with baited breath to see what happens here. If the inevitable does happen it's expected the Dogs will make a play for Grundy and pick 1 from WCE. English will be the lynchpin in a fair few moves this off season it seems.
-Naughton not going anywhere, confident next contract will be his last
                      -Buku has interest from Essendon
-Crozier is shopping around and not finding much interest
-Dimma to GC is all but signed off, Dusty might just join him up there as well.
                      -Dogs are in Tomlinsons ear
-Liam Henry 99% will be a Dog next season
-bit of talk around Lachie Schultz wanting out of Freo for a Vic club as well.
-If Barass goes anywhere 99% its going to be to Sydney, Dogs are one of the interested clubs but seems like Sydney are the leaders in that race.
-Melbourne and Sydney are chasing Oscar Allen, trying to pry him out of WCE
-McKay asking way to much, wants years + 850k+, not much interest in him on our end.

Our club is going to war with the media behind the scenes, pulling back from all but mandatory media engagements, be prepared to see alot of hit pieces / bullshit written about us for a while to come, including bullshit about player movement / players not happy / Bevo is satan, this is a conscious decision made at board level. No idea why or what good it's going to do if you ask me.

Thanks Vred, thats a lot to unpack so I'll focus on the Dogs

I just can't see Smith going anywhere else but there will be plenty of interest.

Regarding English it's another one that I find hard to see leaving at the end of this year and perhaps WC will have to wait another 12 months. Big contracts are one thing but playing at a club that is so weak at the moment is another. A multi year deal on big money is probably not something we can match.
Melbourne won't be easy to deal with for Grundy who's on big money in one way or the other and while you might get pick one from West Coast I suspect they would want both of our first rounders coming back. Deal of this sort of magnitude would really test our list management negotiation skills.

I'm confident that Naughton will stay with us.

Buku will get some interest from other clubs and given there doesn't appear to be a lot of noise that we are in negotiations with him unless he has a couple of blinders it's going to be hard to see him staying on with us.

                        Crozier won't get any interest.

I suspect we are a couple of years late to be interested in Tomlinson and while he's got 2 outstanding defenders in front of him at Melbourne given he is now 30 and struggles with injuries this should be an easy pass for us.

I only have mild interest in Liam Henry. Yes he has ability but he probably plays his best football in a position we have enough cover for. It wouldn't be the worst trade if he was more of an effective forward.

Schultz has some mild appeal because he can play in a position we need some depth in

Barrass is talented but he misses a bit too much footy as far as I'm concerned.

I don't believe this to be true although we probably do have preferred media contacts.

Some great stuff in there, Ta. If English goes that changes things for me re. Grundy. We'll need his experience and he could ruck for 5 more years. Also great to hear that Naughton is imbedded in the club.

English would be mad not to take that sort of coin. Out of Naughts and English I'd still rather lose English. English is not a ruck and Naughton is a better forward.

If the Henry rumour is true I'd be absolutely stoked and amazed. Already a star. Since when do we prize out gun 21 year olds?
