Let's say the players are successful and presume it is June/July. Would they be fit enough to play with no real pre-season or match practise.? The season would only have maybe 5 weeks to go, so the injunction is a big risk.

They don't need an injunction. If the current process goes through and it is found that the CAS rulings were not binding, the players would theoretically be free to play (pending any further appeals) immediately upon the decision.

Not ideal, but if we get to June/July and a fit (not match fit admittedly, but a couple of Footscray games would help), fresh Crameri is suddenly available it could be a godsend.

Like everyone, I wish the whole thing would be over already, just looking at interesting possible outcomes. This is one that could potentially provide some benefit to us.

If they were allowed to play what happens to the players Essendon chose and how do we know these players even want to play at Essendon again, maybe that's why they aren't interested in playing this year.

It's a good point. It may be why they haven't gone for the injunction.

Banned 34 are 'victims', says Dogs coach

THE 34 past and present Essendon players banned for anti-doping offences are "victims", according to Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge.

In a passionate defence of the suspended 34, Beveridge said that in the football club environment that existed in 2012, there was little chance Essendon players would have questioned the reassurances that the club's supplements program was within the rules.

"We maintain as a football club the whole 34 subjected to that regime are just victims of a regime that had gone off course," Beveridge told radio station 3AW.

He said he felt for each player suspended but Dyson's Heppell's experience probably illustrated best why the players had put their faith in those responsible for the program.

"He was drafted at the end of 2010 and Dyson was an Essendon supporter and the coach of the day was his idol," Beveridge said.

"When the coach stands in front of you it is 'no sir, yes sir, three bags full sir', and anyone who steps out of line, who is a boat rocker, probably doesn't last that long."

Dons' appeal unlikely to succeed, expert says

Beveridge said those involved in football clubs at the elite level knew the reality of how football clubs were managed in 2012.

"Anyone who has been involved at this level knows that the coach and his constituents hold the whip hand. Any direction they want to take the program in, the players just follow," Beveridge said.

"I still maintain they were told everything was above board and they would believe it. No one would question it."

However he said things had changed since Essendon's experience and that players would now question changes to a program.

Western Bulldogs' forward Stewart Crameri and staff member Brent Prismall both received two-year bans that have ruled them out of the 2016 season after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the World Anti-Doping Authority's appeal.

Beveridge said he was disappointed the club wasn't able to replace Crameri on their 2016 list, and was upset that other clubs had questioned the Bulldogs' right to do so in submissions made to the AFL.

"I genuinely feel for the Essendon Football Club and their supporters and the 34 players," Beveridge said.

"The Essendon players have been treated like a European cycling team who should know better. Well, no, they shouldn't know better because they had no grounding to work from."

You kinda have to think that what Beveridge is saying comes from his time as a journeyman player. A journeyman has to do a lot right to stay on a list for any amount of time and it doesn't take much to be cut loose.

What Beveridge says is what I and many have thought all along. It's not an excuse, it's the way football clubs are run.(or were run) Senior players are the ones you would think would question what is going on. I feel sorry for the young guys that just went along with what the coach said.

Hopefully this is a big lesson for all.

The thing that worries me is the poor saints player who got done for taking some sort of drink innocently, there needs to be an exception sometimes and that was probably one that should have been.

Bevo was a fringe player and would have spent his entire playing career doing exactly what he was told - whilst I disagree with his perspective on the players I can completely understand where it comes from.

For mine it is a naïve, insular and antiquated viewpoint, and it doesn't take into account the secretive and duplicitous nature of the EFC doping regime that deliberately bypassed club officials (Doc Reid) - the players were in on this secret en masse and really can't use the "following orders from superiors" defence.

Hal Hunter was the youngest player on the list back then and he had the common sense and judgement not to sign the consent forms. It is damning that almost every other player did not show the same basic common sense.

Perhaps Bevo is greasing Heppell up to make a play for him at the end of the season - he was particularly effusive in his praise and concern for Heppell in that interview.

You can't make exceptions, otherwise eveyrone will use the same excuse, they didn't know it was banned.

(controversy alert).....Saad is a wog - he looks like he should be lighting flares at Wanderers games. Not the sort of "good bloke you can have a beer with" that the footy media can make a hero out of and get their constituents to buy into and swallow the hero narrative. He's an expendable commodity as a result.

If you think about it, he drank a legal soft drink in a one-off incident whereas the EFC 34 doped themselves silly with literally thousands of injections done under the cover of darkness from their club doctor and off-site away from the club itself. It is mind-boggling the lengths the footy community is going to absolve the players of any wrong-doing and justify their bone-headedness (and best) or their cheating, duplicitous behaviour (at worst).

I think you are underplaying the culture of teams. There is usually no place for individuality.

I think it's fair though that an over the counter product should be viewed differently to a chemical compound that is purchased illegally/ on the black market. Sure, a penalty should still be in place but I think they could be given levels of seriousness.
