Not sure there is any available - the kids who might be available are the 185cm types and we have 1186cm Gowers playing that role for us, ideally we'd have someone a bit taller who is a genuine marking threat. Mcgovern would have been ideal.

We might have to just draft one, jeez it would have been nice to grab Membrey when he was available for a reasonable trade price. Perhaps we'll grab one at the mid-season draft? Corbett for the Suns moved well today.

1186 cms is already pretty tall. I dont think we will find anyone taller!
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Dougal Howard from Port has some appeal, good mover for his size and looks capable at both ends and would probably come cheaper than Tomlinson. Thoughts?

Good suggestion, he's had a good apprenticeship and might be ready to move to another side as he would be caught behind some other talls at Port

Josh Kelly made a mistake re-signing could've had the god sized deal at the dogs now. Let's put that into Coniglio.

Time for my weekly mention of Sam Day who still seems on the outer at the Suns.

Seems the exact sort of player who has talent, is on the outer and who would improve with a fresh start.
                    26 years old, 197cm.

Former pick 3 but was drafted so long ago that is less relevant. Can play both ends but I think he's better suited to defence.

Re: BT's very, very, very, very early list management thread 2019-2020

                      June Update:

I've spent the week dredging through past trades, looking for similar precedents and then looking to run rumoured names through them and the picks we have at the end of the season according to www.liveladders.com.au predictor.

                      Draft Picks: 5, 23, 41, 45, 47, 78 (59 Duryea)

Trade Rumour (via Mofra): Carlton KPD, Jacob Weitering.

The precedent here is St Kilda vs Essendon with Jake Carlisle (5 & 24, Carlisle & 14). Carlton will have something like 14 back from the Adelaide trade, and I'm assuming a desperation to get into the top 5. So if you rate Weitering on par with Carlisle then it's Weitering & pick 14 - for - Pick 5, pick 23. Weitering is currently on a good contract. About $400,000 base plus incentives on games played and B&F finishes.

                      Trade Rumour (media): Jack Martin

If the above trade left us with pick 14, I'd offer a straight swap. I have personal reservations on the player, but I can see the attraction to him. Martin for Pick 14. That's against the precedents of Polec for pick 11, and Tom Mitchell for pick 14.

                      Trade Rumour (media): Isaac Smith

Isaac Smith & Pick 59, 84 - for - 47, 78. The way he smacked this back yesterday I'm not going deep. The precedent here is the Jordan Lewis trade to Melbourne.

Trade Rumour (media): Adam Tomlinson - Free Agent

Just a matter of money and convincing him we are going in the right direction. A backline of Weitering, Cordy & Tomlinson is a solid unit with runners around them.

                      Draft: 41, 45, 47, 78

Unsubstantiated Trade Innuendo - Outgoing - Bailey Williams

If Bailey Williams wanted back to SA after a flat season to date... Well this could really open up some interesting lateral moves. I'd want a kid back, former Northern Knight Lachlan Murphy and a 2020 second rounder. Murphy is deployed as a small forward ranked 5th in the league for tackles inside 50, 20th in the league for goal assists and averages a bit over a goal a game. A missing dynamic in our forward line. I'd be happy to give them pick 41 for 50 this year to sweeten it a little.

Now, if we can cover draft points for next year's FS (MacPherson) & if the AFEL leaves us with Ugle-Hagan with two seconds (one from a Williams trade), a third and fourth rounder, which we can, then we can put our 2020 first rounder out into the marketplace. We can not afford a huge salary for the pick (if we trade in several good needs based players), but if we could get a top end kid out of an interstate club, say Ben King then we can make this a year to bring in talent. Or see if our 2020 first helps in a Tim Kelly trade, for the right player from WCE. Let's see what happens.

Now I don't want to lose Williams, but we'd have him covered by say Richards.

                      Draft Points Trade:

                      Pick 45 & 47 into about pick 34.

                      In options:

                      1. Jacob Weitering (FB)
                      2. Adam Tomlinson (CHB)
                      3. Jack Martin (MID)
                      4. Lachlan Murphy (Small Pressure FWD)
                      5. 2020 first player trade (Best Elite Young Player Avilable)
                      6. Pick 34 (Via Draft Points Trade)
                      7. Pick 50 (Downgrade of Pick 41)
                      8. Pick 78 (Kellett as a FS or other)
                      9. Pick 102 (upgrade Lachie Young)
*. Gardner elevated into Lachie Young's former rookie list spot

The question for consideration is what's the strategy for our salary cap? Is it to target big names on huge money, or to make targeted improvements across the lines? I'm tending towards a big shopping list of talent on good contracts, but not excessive. Tomlinson, Weitering, Martin & say Ben King are all top 10 draftees who have elite traits. I'm becoming less sold on targeting another million dollar player. We can secure these players at the full utilisation of our salary cap war chest. Retirements down the track (Suckling, Wood etc), salary cap rises and trades out will more than cover retaining our list.

Looking at 2020 draft next year. We take in 2 X 2nd, 3rd & 4th rounders. Maybe look trade fringe players out to bulk up draft points. As stated above this gives us enough draft points for Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (leave him to us please AFEL) & Ewan Macpherson, even at highish prices.

We've been getting a lot of kids the last few years and looking to get even more kids next year. This year might be a good opportunity to re-balance list with key experienced players to help on field and help with standards and development.

After shocktober we addressed the lines (Boyd FF, Biggs HBF, Hamling FB). Except this time not pumping $1M into one player, but using $1.6M (& Williams savings) to improve the list overall.

                      Nine outs:

                      1. Williams (traded)
                      2. Picken (retired)
                      3. Boyd (retired)
                      4. Dickson (retired)
                      5. Morris (retired)
                      6. Roberts (let go)
                      7. Porter (let go)
                      8. Webb (let go, poor bloke is built like Tom Williams)
                      9. From: Suckers (ret. if sick of injuries, or re-assess NFL ambitions with injuries) or trade for 2020 picks Dale (Essendon previous interest) or Jong (Gold Coast previous interest)

We are losing a lot of experience, up to 5 or 6 premiership players, so we need to pick a bit of experience up.

                      Indicative 2020 Team Sheet:

                      B: Daniel Weitering Cordy
                      HB: JJ Tomlinson Crozier
                      C: Martin Bontempelli Hunter
                      HF: B. Smith Schache Richards
                      F: Murphy Naughton Wallis
                      R: English, Dunkley, Macrae

Others: McLean, Liberatore, Lloyd, Lippa, Trengove, 2020 future trade player, Wood, Young X 2, Duryea, Gowers, West, Greene, Dale, Lynch, Hayes, Cavarra, Khamis, Vanders, rookies, 2019 draftees

KP Defence: Weitering, Cordy, Tomlinson, Young, Wood (lots of runners)
KP Forward: Naughton, Schache, Trengove, Gardner
                      Ruck: English, Trengove, Sweet
                      Onballers: Lots

2020 list option: Open four or five spots from Suckling/Dale/Jong/Cavarra/Lynch/Hayes/trade request out. Filled with Ugle-Hagan, MacPherson and option to elevate Khamis &/or Sweet or live picks. Then add in some fresh rookies.

The individual players in this post can of course change. The precedents of the trades at the top of this post show us what is realistic in terms of trades. It's also a contrast of whether spreading our salary cap wealth is a better strategy than pursuing a big salary like Cognilio. And with good kids on the line next year, bring forward trading from a long shopping list of talented player. At minimum, it hopefully makes for some good discussions about our direction at year's end.

Day is the type of player we should be looking. He would be a low key addition that targets a specific need. He has a bit of versatility, I didn't realise that he's kicked 74 goals, and he has played over 100 senior games of football and should be able to slot in as a key defender for us. He also turns 27 this year so has a wealth of experience. If he passes the medical tests he would be worth considering.

While I'd love to land a big name it's not a necessity in my opinion because I do think we have a good list that's just under performing.
I'd still prefer to target some younger players that have experience and still have their best football in front of them and then also add a player or two like Day to target specific gaps in the list.

We have a bit of currency as well and it looks like a pick in the top 10 or our multiple picks in the 3rd round could be sought after.

After hitting home runs with Naughton, Richards, Smith and West in the last 2 drafts and trading for Schache (I'm still a believer) we are well placed to either go to the draft and land some top end talent or trade away some early picks to acquire a star player or two.

We've got money to spend, if the right options present, we can look at lower key Crozier and Trengove type additions or we can keep building through the draft. It's a strong hand and I'm confident we have the right people to evaluate all options.

Add to that young guys who aren't getting opportunity in Payne and Ballenden. Both big athletic boys that could help boost our key position player dept and talent.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

Wasn’t McStay a great friend of Someone who plays for us ?
I’m not sure on McStay , although he is hard at it which our talls seem to have a lack of.
Doesn’t seem to get enough of the ball at the moment.

I’m not sure on McStay , although he is hard at it which our talls seem to have a lack of.
Doesn’t seem to get enough of the ball at the moment.
McStay and Tom Boyd were school friends growing up. Not sure that relationship will help much.
