Re: 2022 Draft Watch
We have improved our hand in this draft & have Picks 11, 21 & 39. We have also improved out hand in 2023 with 2 x F1 picks.
I won't be surprised if we trade a F1 into this year's draft if the right player is available. Sam Power alluded to it as an option. The Swans a possible trade partner. Kinnear Beatson mentioned they were keen to get into next year's draft. Could be one to watch.
Some early thoughts on what we might do.
Pick 11 - Go best available for sure. Who that would be is arguable. I really like Josh Weddle for this pick. He is a general all purpose defender. Capable of playing on smalls and talls. A bit like Maynard in size and has a similar competitive edge. For a team full of nice guys it wouldn't hurt to have a bit more grunt. The best tallish defender in this draft in my view.
Others who could be available;
Oliver Hollands - good two way running winger. Works very hard. Could see him playing round 1.
Brayden George - explosive mid sized forward capable of kicking bags and helping out in the midfield. Would have been my first choice for this pick but for injuries. Will miss 2023. It's a risk but the talent is enormous. Could slide down the order as a result.
Could Phillipou or Humphrey slide to to us? Unlikely but you never know. Would pass on Jefferson, Busslinger, Hustwaite. Good players but I don't see them as the right fit for us.
Pick 21 - In such an even draft in the early rounds it's hard to predict who will be available. I'm looking to fulfil needs here but also looking for players who proved themselves at the elite junior level;
Charlie Clarke - energetic small forward with a bubbly personality. Made NAB League team of the year. Kicks goals in different ways (incl crumbing) & works hard defensively. Seems a great fit.
Olli Hotton - I love goal kicking wingers. Can play deeper forward. Very clever player who just seems to get into dangerous positions to attack. Will most likely be gone but would be an exciting pick up.
Darcy Jones - Loved his game against Metro. Was thinking WOW how elusive is this guy. A small ball winning midfielder who creates and kicks goals. Our senior team desperately needs these types of players. MJP loves him in case anyone missed that!
Harry Barnett - Arguably the best ruckman in the draft. Strong mark and prepared to do the grunt work. Has a bit of presence and also capable in a key forward role. I doubt we will pick him but we need a developing ruckman.
Max Gruzewski - didn't see a lot of him due to injury but there's a bit of X factor about him and his weapon is his marking. Gives me Easton Wood vibes!
Wildcards - Ed Allan is bolting up the draft boards. Isaac Keeler is hugely talented. Jakob Ryan for some hard running.
Pick 39 - I guess we can wait and see who slips through however I wouldn't mind if we think a bit more creatively with this pick. A player who has a dynamic skill but we might need to be a bit patient with or a longer term proposition in an area of need.
Anthony Munkara - has all the tools to be a skilful forward or winger. Can kick a bag. Didn't see much of him at the champs.
Harry Lemmey - was touted as a top 5 pick earlier in the year. A key forward who can also play in defence. It didn't happen for him at the champs and he has since slipped down the order. Good enough to play senior SANFL level. There must be something there.
James Van Es - Key defender who tested incredibly well at the draft camp for speed and jumping. Didn't light up the champs for Vic country. He has the right frame for a developing full back and could be a good project player.
Brandon Leary - a small forward from Tas. He knows where the goals are as he is always among them. Seems more of a finisher than a creator or assister at this stage. That would be something he would need to add to his game. But is clever & tricky & he gets his goals in different ways.
