Re: 2022 Draft Watch
Green.
#1 - Great footy name. Small inside mid who played senior footy basically ALL year in a pretty strong side. South missed top 3 by 2-points due to a draw then went down to a Freo loaded Peel side (14x AFL listed) in the elimination final despite dominating the first half...basically, he held his spot in a top 3 senior side all season. So there's that.
That said, the total package is way more than the sum of the parts because I'm not certain he has a single AFL attribute. He's small, not super quick, not perfect below his knees, not a great kick...but somehow he gets the job done. I can't see him being drafted this year - but I can see him forcing his way onto a list in the next couple of seasons Matt Priddis style. For me his team-mate McQuilkan is a much better prospect and was named as a small defender in the WAFL team of the year...he's 21 and a very likely type.
Bevan.
Massive inside mid. He looked like the incredible hulk playing colts footy this year and pretty much did whatever he wanted. He's at a very strong club - WP finished on top in the seniors and made the GF in all 3x grades and that generally means 'no senior footy'...pretty sure he played colts all year. He is an inside ball winner/distributor - hands before feet style player. Uses his body well, controls the contest, runs OK, kicks OK. Is he an AFL player? No idea. Played primarily hf for WA which seemed, well, odd. Was not super effective in doing so. You only need one club to like you and from what I understand about him he has a single-minded determination to make it - if a club backs him in and sees him as a #2/#3 inside mid within 24-months then he will get an opportunity to be a Dunkley style inside mid. If I was recruiting it would come down to the interviews with this one...he has size and wins the footy - does he present as someone who can do that at senior level?
Again. If I was recruiting from WA I would be looking at Cleaver (EF) and McQuilkan (SF) outside of the usual suspects at the top end of the draft. Those two I think have really strong AFL attributes...Bevan and Green are to me Rookie selections or players who are going to have to prove it in the WAFL for a season or (more likely) two. Green in particular is more than the sum of his parts - you kind of have to be a bit of a believer because there seems to be a bit 'missing' both physically and skill wise...but he gets the job done. Bevan is a big body...is that the reason he dominated or is it real craft? Hard to tell...
