On the flip side I really want us to hit the draft and take 4 top 30 picks to help bring through some more midfield talent - which the list is in desperate need of.

The other thing floating around in my head is something jeemak said is you can't change the list over all in one go.

Over the next two years we should be aiming for approx. 12 list changes. Hopefully a couple of players will stand up and surprise and demand a contract extension.

With that in mind anyone with multi year contracts I think have a future with the club and anyone with a single year contract is either in the last chance saloon.

Josh Bruce: 1 year - he has really embraced going back into defense and was really solid pre injury.
Hayden Crozier: GO - would love to keep him around for experience but age has really caught up with him.
Bailey Williams: 3 years - hopefully Williams isn't a contract year perform type player. One of our most consistent in 2023
Laitham Vandermeer:1 year - pace, pace and more pace. Seems best 22 when fit so gets another year.
Lachlan McNeil: GO - has pace but doesn't impact the contest or enough when he gets the ball.
Anthony Scott: 2 years - I've been a huge fan since he came to the club - Mr. Versatile
Tim O'Brien: 1 year - injury prone and not week in week out consistent when fit, which we need from our defenders.
Jordon Sweet: 2 years - Break glass in case of emergency.
Roarke Smith: 2 years - I think we really could've used him in the first 11 rounds but injury has kept him out.
Mitch Hannan: GO: Doesn't take enough of his opportunities when he is picked.
Dominic Bedendo: GO - He's been unlucky with injuries this year; not sure what role he plays moving forward.
Buku Khamis: GO - He seems suited to the third tall role either back or forward but the MC see him as a forward only and we seem stocked for that type of position.
Robbie McComb: GO - tries extremely hard just not good enough for this level.
Cody Raak: GO - he has been around the club for a number of years but doesn't seem to be making enough of an impact.
Toby McLean: 1 year - Clearly has lost his pace and struggles with the speed of the game. Deserves another pre season to get his body 100% right.
Alex Keath: GO - His last couple of years have been ruined by injury, as a result his pace has gone. Now goes to ground too often.
Taylor Duryea: 1 year - Provides strong leadership and currently best 22 but his body is letting him down. Hopefully someone demands his position over the pre season.
Oskar Baker: 2 years - In the first 11 rounds has made the second wing spot his own. Isn't afraid to use his pace and long kicking (meters gained into todays game is king). I also love his self confidence.
James O?Donnell: 2 years - clearly has something and should get a two year contract like any other draftee would.
My observation is 5 off the main list, but two rookie elevations too (Scott & Smith). Not many main list spots to take lots of picks in, especially if we want Croft for a bunch of late picks/points. I think we need to be pushing 7-8 off the main list.

      Re: 2023 List Management Thread

While our current 22 are sort of main stays I think we need to put some youth under it to see how things go when the main stay taper off or get too old.
Gone Raak, McComb, Hannan, McNeil, Vandermeer and Crozier and the rest what ever seem a reasonable length on contract.

        Re: 2023 List Management Thread

        Easy ones:
Anthony Scott, Bailey Williams, Oskar Baker, JOD. All are best 22 except the last, and we clearly highly rate him. Would be comfortable with 2 year contracts for all, 3 also fine for Williams. Keep JOD on the rookie list in whatever weird category we can though.

        Probables:
Josh Bruce was pretty decent in defence, and seems to be a good character around the club. I don't really see what the plan is for him going forward as I assume defence looks like Gardner and Jones ahead of him in his role, but I'd be pretty happy with giving him one year to compete. Probably wait till the back end of the season though in case he gets another big injury or something.

Laitham Vandermeer. Frustrating but has been played almost always when fit. Would like to see him trialled at half back but think 1 year is reasonable.

Tim O'Brien. He is fine in that 3rd tall role, one year contract to see if JOD or Jed can overtake him. I think he's been decent.

        Roarke Smith.
Injuries haven't helped but real reliable soldier in the past when picked. This is dependant on him actually getting some games and performing to his usual standard. If he can't do that then he moves down a category. 1 year only.

Taylor Duryea. Best 22, but starting to push it. Hoping Cleary can bob up and put some pressure on this role. 1 year.

Lachie McNeil. Has been picked a lot despite low impact, but plays that role we insist on picking players in and is decent at it. Has been pretty poor this season though so will need a couple of good games before he actually gets the 1 year contract from me.

Jordon Sweet. Hard one to place, we have no intention of ever using him but on stuff all money and a 1 year deal he is pretty handy depth.

        Probably Not
Hayden Crozier. Is fine still but doesn't really add anything to the list. Definitely not best 22 and is not really pushing for a spot anymore.

Dominic Bedendo. At present he is a promising talent that hasn't been able to demonstrate it. I'd be inclined to demote him to the rookie list unless he puts some promising games together in the back end of the season. Also pretty content to cut him.

Mitch Hannan. He is ok depth and i don't think he is terrible but also he hasn't looked like adding anything to our side since 2021. Cut.

Buku Khamis. I've really liked him when we have played him forward, I am unconvinced by what i have seen down back. We seem uninterested in picking him as either though, so whats the point of keeping him. Think he will do a Fergus Greene where he eventually gets another gig and looks ok before not really making it.

Robbie McComb. Can battle hard to fill a role but doesn't actually add anything. Thanks but no.

Cody Raak. Seems to be improving so could be worthy of another chance, especially if he remains a rookie. I have no idea what we actually see him doing for us though so until i see some kind of evidence that he is an asset he gets cut.

Toby McLean. Aside from one final against Freo has had maybe 3 games in the last 5 years where he has actually been good. Super injury prone, moves like a 2000's key forward, is no good as a forward and doesn't get a gig in our midfield, I love him but no.

Alex Keath. He is not terriblebut there isn't enough room to carry a bunch of nearly AFL level key defenders and I think Bruce gets the nod. With us trying to get gametime into JOD and I assume Jed his spot looks done.

That's two rookie promotions (Baker, Scott), one demotion to rookie (Bedendo), one rookie cut (McComb), 5 senior list spots cut (Mclean, Keath, Crozier, Bedendo, Khamis) leaving 4 empty spots.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

              SEN:

Former Demon Oskar Baker has signed with the Western Bulldogs as a rookie for the 2023 season.

The Bulldogs now have one list spot remaining for next year?s season after signing Baker on the opening day of the pre-season supplemental selection period.

Baker played AFL 15 games for the Demons in his five years at the club but didn?t make it on the park in 2022, instead featuring in the VFL side that claimed the premiership.

The 24-year-old was delisted in October.

Bulldogs list manager Sam Power said Baker?s signature addresses a need for the club.

?Oskar comes to us with really exciting attributes that complement the current make up of our midfield,? Power said.

?We felt it was important to add more speed to the group, particularly on the wing, and think Oskar will make an immediate impact.

?Oskar comes out of a successful program with five seasons of AFL experience and a fantastic work ethic. He is a great person that will be a welcome addition to our football program in the months to come.?

The Bulldogs took three picks across the National Draft ? including key tall Jedd Busslinger at pick 13 ? but chose against more selections at the rookie draft.

Oskar Baker will continue his AFL career in red, white and blue after signing as rookie for the upcoming 2023 season.

The 24-year-old officially put pen to paper on the opening day of the pre-season supplemental selection period, leaving one spot available on the Bulldogs? playing list ahead of the new campaign.

Baker crosses to the Bulldogs after playing 15 games across five seasons for Melbourne, having been a part of the Casey Demons VFL flag this season.

The Queensland product will bring speed to the wing, and add further depth and versatility to the Dogs? midfield.

Bulldogs? General Manager of List and Recruiting, Sam Power was pleased to welcome Baker to the Kennel.

                  Re: 2023 List Management Thread

I see there's a Herald Sun article about clubs circling Naughton and English...hardly surprising...but, at what point do we actually need to consider offers for them? And when is Jeemak starting the Trade English thread?

I am really concerned that Croft is going to take all of our draft currency again, and we will have a bevy of elite talls but no a-grade mids. In 5 years, how would we be planning to fit all of English, Croft, Darcy, Naughton, JUH, Busslinger in the team?

My view is that we're not considering offers this year...but within 1-2 years I won't be surprised if we see one of English/Naughton leave in exchange for elite midfield talent.

I don't believe adding Croft is going to cost us that much and assuming a bid comes after pick 10. With the discount applied we could use one of our first round picks to cover that bid. If he goes a bit later then it becomes a vastly easier option.
We could also choose not match the bid and I think our supporters would understand if we focused on other needs.

Offers are going to come from WC for either Naughton or English but they're not the attractive team to play for like they once were.
Based on reports last year I'm not sure Fremantle has the capacity within their salary cap to be a significant player.

You might be right that in a couple of years our attitude to trading a big name player could increase. Our genuine premiership window is probably the next 2 years and we might need to reassess that every year.

Between Darcy, JUH and Croft with Lobb and Buku in the meantime we're much closer to replacing Naughton than we are English and his half decade of development.

Realistically we just have no way of entertaining an English trade without also targeting a ruckman from somewhere else

Absolutely - However I think we could more easily recruit a replacement for English than Naughton. I'd prefer we keep them both.
