    Re: 2024 Draft Watch

I love when the footy season is in full swing but I also really enjoy reading the the views shared here with players that could be in our draft range. I know it's a highlights package so good by design but I like what I've seen with Davis especially since I hadn't seen his name mentioned his name much before.

Twomey October Form Guide: (if I?ve counted the matched bids right)

Our 1st: Hynes (190cm mid, forward)

An ankle injury ruled Hynes out of testing at the Draft Combine, with the Stingrays talent managing it towards the end of his season. As a forward/midfielder, Hynes has size on his side and plays in a style that uses it – he bustles through packs, breaks out of tackles and has the strength to mark overhead. He booted 23 goals for the Stingrays from 15 games whilst also averaging 24 disposals.

Our 2nd: Hannaford (180cm small forward)

There wasn't much of the ball heading Hannaford's way early in the Coates Talent League Grand Final as the Rebels were crushed by Sandringham, so Hannaford moved from attack into the midfield and helped his team get moving. The talented prospect finished with 24 disposals, nine tackles and a goal in an impressive display to finish off a red-hot close to 2024. The quick and robust small forward moved into top-25 contention with his back end of the year, kicking 21 goals in the final nine games.

It's a ranking, not a phantom draft. It's not how he sees the picks falling. He doesn't do his phantom until just prior to the draft.

          Yep, a form guide.

As far as talent intersecting need, it’s not a bad guide of the types we might be looking at.

True. Both Hynes and Hannaford went to us in the BF phantom I pointed out. They are certainly around the mark. When we get closer to the draft the whispers come to the fore and the club-player links become clearer.

Our first pick is an interesting spot as the bolters and sliders emerge too. Looking guys like Allan (Coll) & Lohmann bolting up to around this mark. While there’s always sliders too. Tricky kind of pick but usually an interesting type of pick.

                Re: 2024 Draft Watch

Surely we don't take a ruckman with our first pick! Zero Hanger's take:

2024 AFL Mock Draft: Picks 1-27 (first edition)

The 2024 AFL Draft is now less than a month away, so as it approaches we've begun to look at who each club could select in the first round of the count with our first Mock Draft of the year.

A total of 23 selections shared by a dozen different clubs currently make up this year's opening round of picks, while priority-tied prospects are likely to see the number of selections balloon out following matched bids.

Richmond currently hold seven first-round selections, including the prized Pick 1, while St Kilda, Melbourne, GWS and Sydney also have multiple spots in the queue early into the draft.

We've looked at how each first-round selection might unfold and offer some insight into the top draft stars your club could recruit come November 20.

This exercise does not include predicted live trading, with the draft order to remain as it currently reads, with the exception being matched bids for father-son or Academy prospects.

Following Mock Drafts will be published closer to the AFL Draft, looking at alternative outcomes and will include live trades.

Pick 20 - Western Bulldogs - Alex Dodson

                Position: Ruck
                Height: 201cm
                State: South Australia
                Club: Payneham

The Bulldogs are an interesting club to assess ahead of the draft, but with lacking ruck stocks they could call on the first ruckman of the count in Dodson.

The South Australian basketball prodigy is the leading ruck for 2024, having managed 17.3 disposals, 19.7 hitouts, 6.7 hitouts to advantage and 3.7 clearances in his three games for SA at the National Championships.

Athletically gifted and standing at 201cm, Dodson was named in the U18 All-Australian side and was a dominant force for Sturt's U18s side this year also.

With Tim English leading the way for the Dogs' ruck unit, Dodson could be a formidable selection at Pick 20 who can one day take the mantle at the Kennel.

I had heard that Dodson was going to sign with Collingwood as a Cat B rookis thus bypassing the draft. Pretty poor journalism if that is the case

I believe you may be thinking of Alex Condon. You can't have played footy for at least 3 years to be category B eligible.

COLLINGWOOD will step up talks in coming months to officially sign exciting talent Alex Condon, who has continued to pursue a career in the NBA while having a commitment with the Magpies.

Condon spent time with Collingwood last month while in Melbourne during a break, having last year nominated the Magpies as his preferred club as a category B rookie when he becomes eligible in August.

The 212cm talent from Western Australia accepted a scholarship with the University of Florida for his basketball talents but agreed to join the Magpies once his three-year stint without playing football was over.
It actually stinks a little as Condon played state footy for WA. This is not what the category B rookie system was designed for, Collingwood will be able to bring in an elite junior footballer from outside the draft and pay nothing.

As a comparison I don't believe JOD ever played that level of representative footy.

I like Dodson. I think I flagged him earlier in this thread, and I wouldn't mind having his name called out at our first pick. He's more physically developed than your usual under-18s ruck so isn't the slow build you'd usually expect. He's a great athlete and gets around the ground well but has strong follow-up ability at the stoppage - bit of a Brodie Grundy type.

Jack Ough might be worth considering with a later selection.
He's a midfielder type but might be better suited to a role as a defender. He's got some work to do on his kicking.

He doesn't turn 18 until mid December.

Ough has played all over the ground this season but it was his late season move into the engine room that brought the most excitement. Standing 194cm, Ough showed his ability to win the ball in tight and get it out to runners on the outside with his work in traffic and ball-winning. The East Point prospect's best game in that role came in the Rebels’ final against the Geelong Falcons where he amassed 33 disposals, 20 contested possessions, nine clearances and 189 SuperCoach points, before following it up with 22 touches, 12 contested possessions and seven clearances in their win over Oakleigh the following week. Prior to that, Ough had impressed on a wing and off half back at both Vic Country and Coates Talent League level, where his workrate and overhead marking stood out. He highlighted his outside traits with 21 disposals and six marks against Western Australia at the national carnival as a wingman. His height and versatility makes him an attractive proposition for clubs and his potential to become an inside midfielder gives him considerable upside.

                                And that's fine.

I just don't understand how a kid who kicked 4 goals / had 20+ possessions in a WAFL League final against the reigning premiers isn't in the top 20 prospects. Sorry - I meant isn't in the top 30 prospects? I get that it's assessed on the WHOLE year...until I see stuff like this.

I'm not a lover of the Claremont footy club in any way but geez - winning yourself a regular spot in a finals bound senior side and kicking goals in elimination games...doesn't that mean anything?

The players competing against others their age group is one thing...those doing it at senior level is another thing altogether.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.
