Thankfully any ruling on this issue is completely out of the AFL's hands. The players will get smashed, and then the club will be crippled by a mass exodus and multiple law suits against it by angry players and player managers.

I have not seen the developments. Is it definitely confirmed.. No draft picks?

I am gobsmacked that a deal can be 'brokered.' when you do something wrong, illegal and immoral..you still get to sit at the table and have a say in your punishment?!

Does anyone know whether any such deal precludes further ASADa/WADA sanctions?

EFC are trying to use Hird stepping down for 12 months as a means to keep draft picks.

It's not confirmed whether it will be effective.

As far as I can tell, the following is the AFL's position:

            Fine
Lost draft picks for 2013 and 2014
Hird steps down for at least 12 months

IMO that's what it will end up being. And for governance shortfall's that's probably the most they can be done for.

The way I read is is Essendon will use Hird being suspended for 12 months as their trump card and use that to negotitate no loss of draft picks. Then once that deal's accepted Hird will take the AFL to the Supreme court in the hope he can have the ruling overturned and they get off Scot free.

                So basically;

                Fine
Loss of premiership points in a season that gone to shit anyway.

Hird won't pursue his court action. How can he when his grievance and the clubs' grievances are so tightly linked? Once the club rolls over, Hird will too.

Hird knew he was cooked at tonight's presser. He's smart enough to cut and run now the club has stopped unconditionally backing him. He now needs to save face, and suing the AFL without club backing won't help him. From this point he needs to change his tact and build PR credit around "taking a hit" because it was the "honorable thing to do".

I'd be very surprised if EFC participate in the next two drafts.

I am at a complete and utter loss over Little's comments about possible sanctions. Why the hell is he talking about 'reaching middle ground' and 'getting to somewhere where the EFC are happy with' in terms of the deal struck with the AFL?
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

                        Re: AFL targets Essendon Royalty

I'm kind of hoping that is plays out that the AFL put down their punishment, which I expect to be a bit pissweak tbh. Then ASADA/WADA come in and hit them hard. Then Worksafe come in and hit them hard. Then the ACCC comes in and hits them for governance issues.

And if Hird's role in this is as serious as it sounds like it is, he and anybody else who actively injected or caused the injection of players with banned drugs should be banned for drugs. I would also like to see him stripped of all his accolades, but I admit my punishment is in the more extreme and very unlikely.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

I'm going to get up tomorrow morning and rob a bank. Then I'm going to sit down with the police and discuss my punishment. I'll give back half the money and just do a bit of community service.

I was going to tweet something simile to Mark Stevens. I'm not certain about the process in these scenarios but surely what Essendon feels is an appropriate punishments counts for diddly squat?

It was infuriating to hear Little talk about reaching a 'middle' ground with the AFL. As if they are entitled to dictate the penalty and must be appeased. Why hasn't anyone in the media raised that as a concern?

This was all just PR and spin by Essendon to try and salvage any last vestiges of sympathy and support from the public. After all the fighting words and hot air from Little and Hird over the last few weeks, their stance has certainly softened - this is because they know they are screwed.

I have no faith in the AFL Commision but surely they cannot give lesser penalties to Essendon that they gave to Adelaide 12 months ago. The other 17 clubs will demand 2 years of draft pick sanctions be part of their governance punishment.

Look at it as plea-bargaining. They haven't yet been ruled guilty, the deal is obviously dependent on them pleading guilty.
