        I would be very happy to be proved wrong on this. I want them cooked as much as anyone.

          Hot off the press…

          The AFL will today impose a deadline upon Essendon which would force the club to accept the deal before it or front the commission to contest the charges and risk a harsher punishment.
          Should the Bombers fail to agree to a resolution at AFL headquarters on Day Two of the protracted talks, the proposed sanctions — which seemed close to being settled late on Monday — would be taken off the table with the club facing more severe penalties.

            It is in no way in Essendon's interest to let this go to a contested hearing. If that happens the onus will essentially be on Essendon to Disprove the AFL's evidence, or challenge its legitimacy through the courts, both of which would be highly unlikely to succeed given the support of the other clubs to the AFL.

              If I was the AFL and EFC and Hird take the AFL to the Supreme Court then I would say to them, ok, you do that, but next year this is what will happen:

              * No ANZAC day Clash

              * No friday nights

              * No free to air

              * play as many possible games interstate.

              Plus all the penalties and sanctions will stand.

                ... and if they're contesting the fine as well, the extra $500k or so in legal fees should prove a fair disincentive.
                Was it up to $1.2m in legal fees alone Essendon had paid up to last week? That doesn't include PR fees.

                    Also using the defense of we're only 10% culpable is grating me.

                      Blackmail, they'd cry. Couldn't do it. Well, could do it, but couldn't come out and say that's the reason.

                      What I don't understand in all of this, is that Hird is allegedly the roadblock to resolving the issue, and its having an effect on finals, right?

                      So why doesn't the AFL charge Essendon and Hird separately? Remove the individuals from the charges and just deal with the club for now, so you can boot them from the finals, then you've got all summer to sort out the other muppets. I, for one, don't give two shits if Hird coaches right up until the day before Round 1, as long as once he's banned he stays banned.

                        Blackmail - that's what Hird is doing right now.

                        They should have just charged the club and listed the personnel and said EFC you deal with the individuals. The penalties should be high but can be lowered if those individuals are sacked.

                          Is a bit more complex than that. The AFL might run the game but they still need to follow the law.

                            It's done. Banned from finals, lost first two rounds draft picks in 2013 and round 1, 2014 and a $2 million fine. Round 2 of draft in 2013 might still be in the cards.

                                The reports circulating at the moment is that the AFL have taken a stronger stance than some in the media indicated.

                                Loss of draft picks, points lost for both the AFL and VFL teams, fine, suspension for Hird and a few other penalties seem to be heading in the right direction.
