The cashed up bogan Essendon coterie groups will pay that off in seconds flat..

I just couldn't believe my ears... Essendon will not be permitted to participate in the first and second rounds of the 2013 & 2014 drafts.... But they can have the final pick of the first round and they can trade into either of them"..

I nearly choked!.... Am I missing something?!!!

Yep, cop out. They're only half serious.

Theoretically, they can trade a few disgruntled players for pick 1. The Boyd pick..
So for arguments sake lets say Daniher wants to leave and go to, hmmm, Port Adeliade, their first round pick will get him there. Why should Port be punished? I hear what your saying Webby but you are restricting every other club with banishing them from trading in.

I'm more upset about them having a 1st Round pick in 2014.

They have to give up something valuable to trade into it. I actually think this is a good move.

If a player want's to leave there is some options for them

As spiteful as it might sound, I hope you're right...

Except for Goddard - who could garner interest. Fair chance he wouldn't want to stay now anyway. They could trade him.. Think about that. A player they effectively got for free under new AFL rules less than a year ago could now be used as trade bait to exploit the gaping loophole in the AFL's punishment..

Free Agency's the only morally correct thing to offer. I'm very interested to see the AFLPA's stance on that.... Legal firms are surely at the ready!

                Re: AFL targets Essendon Royalty

I think allowing Essendon to trade into the draft, whilst it seems like a soft move, might actually benefit other clubs. We all know how painful they are to trade with, but now we, other clubs, hold all the cards. A player that wants to leave, will go to the draft if they have to, and Essendon will be desperate for the picks. If they just turned around and declared the entire list free agents Essendon would take them to court and win for breaking a contract without any rule or code saying they could do it. In this way, the AFL can assist disenchanted players with finding a new home.

                  Re: AFL targets Essendon Royalty

It will be interesting to see if these "admissions of guilt" pave the way for Essendon players to walk away from their contracts on the grounds of the Club not holding up their end of the deal by providing a safe workplace. If this is the case, Essendon may not find it so easy to trade their way back into the first two rounds given players could simply walk away if the Bombers play hard ball.

Yeah it will benefit other clubs, but it will also benefit Essendon. This is the key point!

One thing that would've benefitted other clubs and NOT Essendon ( and satisfied the AFLPA) is declaring their lists free agents.

Under what rule can they declare an entire list as free agents? Silly.

Yep, the worst for that club is yet to come.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'rule'?

Under the same rule rhey breached which resulted in a $2M fine, coach bans, draft 'bans' etc. they're the ruling body and can issue whatever sanction they deem fitting.

What's more, I'm referring to potential legal ramifications the AFL leaves itself open to. Imagine if your employer effectively 'accidentally' injected you with God knows what, was clearly in breach of OH&S legislation, yet you were not allowed freedom
Of movement to get the hell out of there and join another company/franchise in your professional field.

I expect more to come on that issue!

                              Re: AFL targets Essendon Royalty

I'm not surprised by the sanctions and that they are a little lighter than was due. What irks me most about this though is they lack of contrition from the Essendon Board. The scandal broke in February 2013. They commissioned an investigation which was tabled in May 2013. At that point they should have suspended all parties involved - Hird, Doc, Corcoran and Bomber on full pay pending the results of the AFL/ASADA investigation. They didn't, why? Pretty simply Essendon were flying and in the top 4 and looking like a real Premiership threat.

To me its pretty smart the way Essendon have played this. What I think is disappointing is that now its all done and dusted there is still no contrician from the Bombers hierarchy. Its interesting that the 2 guys who have been sacked are non-bomber people and also the Leiutenants rather than the Generals.

Finally, I have no faith that ASADA will be able to take action. This will be swept under the carpet and forgotten when the next big drama emerges.......

Hird gets a 2 year contract extension the same day he gets a 12 month ban from the game...
