Re: 2021 Rolling List Management Discussion
Carlton play more of a one on one defence than other clubs - we're probably one of the most 'zone' of zone defences, which means players who can lapse in positioning look worse in our system (Young) and players with obvious deficiencies but are more often in the right spot (Cordy) can fit.
Sometimes a player can be both not suited to a team and a decent player. I'm not quite sure where Young fits as he seems to 'almost' fit a few positions but good luck to him.Comment

Re: 2021 Rolling List Management Discussion
Will be interesting to see if he gets opportunities at Carlton. Weitering and Jones have the key defensive posts locked up at the moment - with Plowman and Kemp getting opportunities as 3rd talls. They'll have to work out what to do with Mitch McGovern too and whether he is defender or forward (or VFL player) if Curnow and McKay are healthy.
Kemp needs to get his body right but plays 'short' for his height, was a mid as a junior.
I suspect de Koning plays as a tall forward/ruck relief next year. The kid can play. That rules our McGovern or Young from the forwardline.
Let's not forget Liam Jones will be 31 by the start of next season.Western Bulldogs: 2016 PremiersComment

McGovern would be a salary dump with WCE if they had the cap space.

Could be Liam Jones replacement . Young lacks Liam speed . Maybe he will be the backline intercepting anchor with some relief in the ruck it is where I see him . Would suit carlton unaccountable style of footy , but a Voss now the BOSS may try to change that .Comment

If he isn't a one on one defender but lacks the positioning awareness to play the intercept role in a system like ours where does he fit?I should leave it alone but you're not rightComment

I guess there is a trade off between 'talent' and 'usefulness'. The latter leads to more team contribution, the first is far more seductive.Western Bulldogs: 2016 PremiersComment

Re: 2021 Rolling List Management Discussion
O'Brien would be worth considering and we shouldn't be relying on Easton Wood based on his form over the last couple of years. He's not as effective against smaller players either.
If it's O'Brien for Young then we lose a bit in the ruck depth but knowing that at least he is more likely to be played.
I'd prefer to keep Young but this is a reasonable replacement.
Then Schache moves to defence as a 200cm intercepting KPD with great foot skills. Improving on the output that Young gave us this year.

I actually didn't think he was encouraged in this role very much at all. When he was he looked good. But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.Comment

Re: 2021 Rolling List Management Discussion
This is from the confirmed trades thread but I'd rather not clog it up with discussion so moving it here (initial response is regarding Finlayson to Port).
He's hardly inspiring but if he's on the outs there, is only 22, has played 54 games (which is basically where they start to come good so could be right on the cusp), could be worth looking at?I should leave it alone but you're not rightComment

Re: 2021 Rolling List Management Discussion
Which role. One on one he only really got to play that role in the last 3 games of 2019 and was decent, but I still don't trust him in that role. Young one out with a key forward is scary. As an interceptor hasn't really played it at AFL level since his first season. I am assuming he never did enough in either role at VFL level to demand selection, and thats not really a good sign.I should leave it alone but you're not rightComment

Hawthorn friends texting and DMing me thanking us for taking O'Brien.
I haven't seen a lot of him, I'm not going to shit all over it, I'm sceptical and have very little expectations of what he'll bring. I shat all over the Dureya signing a few years back, maybe I should do the same and it'll turn out great.Comment
