Re: Early Trade Rumours 2023
Thanks for the detailed analysis and the thoughts you have shared which is appreciated.
I have a slightly different take on this if the view is that we genuinely aren't a professional or serious club.
I've suspected for a while that we are probably professional enough especially if a few things fall our way but we lack that bit of ruthlessness and a single minded approach that makes some professional clubs great clubs. We are okay with being around the mark if it means we don't bottom out like we did in the bad old days.
For us making hard decisions often appears to be done as a last resort or when that is forced upon us rather than part of a clinical mindset with lofty ambitions.
We have a mindset that focuses more on the failures in the past as reasons for not doing something rather than a focus of what's possible in the future if we get it right and we clearly don't handle success or failures that well.
Just some examples since our 2016 Flag.
We clearly dined out after our GF 2016 and had a gap year in 2017.
We didn't address distracted players and that created problems within the playing group and that lingered on for a while.
We took action on Stringer at the end of 2017 but the problems were deeper than that and we really would have known about it.
We've held onto marginal players for too long.
After a GF in 2021 we chose not to replace Josh Bruce who had just had his best season with us and I think we paid for that in 2022.
Prior to 2016 when B-Mac was struggling with the job it took a bit of a player mutiny to get him replaced but also we lost our club captain along the way but it did result in a huge turnaround in fortunes. But lets face it would we have replaced B-Mac when we did if Griffen didn't force us into it?
Would we have traded for Boyd when we did if Griff didn't force it and we didn't need big time selling point for members and a good story in the media? I suspect we would have waited until his contract was expiring.
When we lost Stringer we traded late in the piece for Schache and I think this was to get us a good news story as well to offset the loss of Stringer.
Off the field we are highly professional and our work of growing the membership, community involvement, the redevelopment of the Whitten Oval and many years of impressive profits is a testament of what can be achieved and our professionalism.
I've been somewhat critical of a few fan engagement opportunities but I think Ameet has assembled an impressive team that will take us forward.
On the field though we are limited by being not willing to take a risk and I suspect that has meant we haven't achieved what we are capable of. A lot hinges on how we set-up the footy department going forward and I can't wait for some of the pieces to start falling into place.
Just a correction - I never said the club was not professional, only not serious. And we haven't been serious about being completely ruthless and uncompromising in our pursuit of sustained excellence on-field. You have highlighted many examples of this in your post, and the mindset from the top down needs to change (and immediately) across the entire organisation."Look at me mate. Look at me. I'm flyin'"Comment

Ralphy:
Naughton to sign on for more than 5 years at somewhere around $1M a season (yet to be finalised)
English will not sign before next season
Hawthorn to offer Pick 3 on Smith, thinks even if he stays he won’t stay passed next year
Favourites for Pick 4

Probably means Macrae, West, Garcia, Scott and co have to be midfielders or VFL players. Daniel maybe a wing. Arty maybe too.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment
