There's no way to look at this trade which doesn't have us giving overs.
Cool, we just need to win the flag in 2024 and that future 1st becomes a mid 20's pick (after all the F/S and academy picks).

If this off-season is critically important for the club, a move like this is bold as buggery and it signifies that we are a serious organisation treating this off-season with urgency to improve immediately and not wallow around mid-table irrelevancy.

Does whoever we pick at 4 this year improve us next year though? I see the point that we're not sitting around building safely and surely, but this trade doesn't really help us for 2024.

I guess strictly by the numbers pick 4 has a better chance of impacting more immediately than pick 10 and/or Croft, and our recruiters clearly have specifically targeted a player they really want.

Our fortunes in 2024 will largely be determined by the incremental improvement we get from coaching/game plan alterations and the players who stagnated/under-performed in 2023 that have proven to be quality AFL players previously. The club needs to stand by their own expectations, and a move like this shows the club is not wasting any more time to get better and stay better - only time will tell.

Getting the GC future 3rd back makes the deal more palatable IMO - it might end up being only a 25-odd pick downgrade after the academy/compromised selections in the 1st round next year.

If we're getting Watson the small forward fast pressure building pocket types are the kind of players that can impact from day 1. Think the Riolis (Cyril and Daniel) who played in premierships in their first years.

Well it is encouraging to see someone normally critical (not in a bad way) likes it.

So the ones not like Clarke?

I've read somewhere that Watson's pressure isn't exactly a strong point and he's more natural as a lead up mark than a crumber.

Obviously Croft has nominated us with that deal done. It's bold but the last trade we went all in on was T.Boyd and it probably netted us a premiership.

I think its's also leaning to either Smith or English leaving potentially also which the expectation we will get back into the first round.

They have given us a lot to be critical of in the last 2 seasons, starting with not bothering to review the GF capitulation.

This off-season is really important and I think the penny has dropped internally and we are treating it with the respect it deserves. A move like this shows that we are acting seriously and decisively. It also shows what a joke the "thorough review" was 12 months ago - no more window dressing and treating the supporters for fools. Just resolve to get better and stay better please.

Clarke had an interrupted pre-season and was pick 22. He might come good but he was never a top 5 prospect

Gresham nominates essendon. McKay and Goldstein paperwork going through as well. We'll know how many more compo picks are coming soon. I'm expecting first rounders for both Gresham and McKay even though it's nonsense.

What are Essendon loading up for?

It's unbelievable that they never learn.

They're going to add Gresham, Goldstein, McKay and Duursma. Absolute one way plodders and a senior past his use by date. It's great.

They're always one player away from being competitive.

Damn it, he's a very good small forward.
