If I had to give any criticism, I'd say perhaps it would have been good to see him play guitar (he stayed on piano all night) but really, that's just nitpicking. His voice suited the material well.

In more recent news, I saw TOTO with a mate at Festival Hall in January. They've had more lineup changes, keyboardist David Paich on the shelf. However the guy filling in for him is a gun. Only 26, and a brilliant player. The guys sounded great. On the other hand, Festival Hall is a complete hole. Yes it has a long and storied history, but really, it's time has come and gone. Either extensive renovations, or a bulldozer required.
No offence taken, it was only 6 months. I figured you just needed time to post a considered answer...

Chili Peppers next week, Prodigy last week. It's been a great month.

Saw Oh Sees last Saturday @ The Croxton - which I haven't liked much as a venue previously (Dinosaur Jr and Gizzard sounded a bit muddled - low ceiling?) but maybe it that I was sober for this gig, as it sounded pretty good. They were on fire for the first 30-40 minutes and then it just unraveled with a 20 + minute jam that did nothing for the crowd bar those surfing the pit....John's an inventive guitarist but extended jams don't suit his style.

Anyway, they finished strongly so not an overall disappointment, just not sure I'd go again if I knew it was like that (they weren't like that at Howler last tour)

Seeing Earthless @ Max Watts for the first time this Thursday - I'm relatively new to this brand of prog/psych, can't wait to see them live.

I'm pretty over Thee Oh Sees now - they used to be one of my favourite bands but they've devolved from a punchy punk-grunge brilliant band into some sort of prog nightmare. Seems like your comparison from show to show conveys my experience with them too.

How were TFC this time around? One of my fave bands but decided to give them a miss this time.

Loved it. Sound mix was a bit patchy. Really weird set list but they played “Everything Flows”, “God Knows It’s True”, “The Concept” and “Alcoholiday” so I was happy. Skipped any of Gerry’s songs which was a bit sad though.

I saw Dinosaur Jr back in the early '90s. The sound was very similiar, errrr, sounding. I saw an interview with J Mascis the day before and the interviewer says "you must love being in Australia" "ohhh, no, not really" "so then why did you come?" "Somebody made me come. I was happy sitting in front of the TV at home otherwise"

I remember thinking what a great gig it was going to be...
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Doesn't that quote just perfectly align with J's persona.
Its not that he particularly dislikes Australia, I'd say. He just seems the type that would dislike having to leave his couch for any destination.
I saw Dinosaur Jr in 97...and loved it.

I have seen Dinosaur Jr at least 20 times. They were the defining band of my youth and I love them.

The shows are always good, and J is always disconnected and disinterested. Plus Lou Barlow constantly picks fights with the crowd.

                    It's just their vibe, man.

J Mascis is actually touring Australia in March.

This gig was at the Prince of Wales. I reckon they were touring to support Bug. The album must have been out for a while though because J had completely lost interest to the extent that at one stage he was sitting on the side of the stage and letting people from he crowd play his guitar for him.

I wouldn't mind but Iggy Pop is waving.

Saw a tweet a few weeks ago from someone offered to interview J on his latest solo tour - quote below.

'if I wanted to make small talk with someone who clearly wanted nothing to do with me, I'd go to a family reunion'

I've seen Dino twice - thought they sounded awesome at the Corner on the I Bet on Sky tour, while I was convinced the Croxton was to blame for the sound on the last tour (his solos were still awesome)

The dude is just not social...at all. I've only been a recent-ish convert to Dinosaur Jr (since just after reforming) but he's one of my favourite guitarists ever, and all their recent albums are awesome.

Heading to the Caravan tonight to see Jeff Duff doing his Lou Reed/Velvet Underground/Iggy show. Guaranteed lots of costume changes and makeup. And a great voice.
