I was really surprised by his age. Mature age recruit.
From Powers interview yesterday I would say we are targeting a younger demographic, we have enough older players it’s time we looked at preparing young players to take over.

It is a good plan. The midfield I think while still good does need a replenish with some new younger talent.

At 22 years of age, we certainly don't want to lose Smith.

Ideally not but I just hope he focuses back more on his footy again.

Don't you think he is focusing on his Footy?

I'd say hes got a lot on his plate and is spreading himself pretty thin and his football has certainly stagnated because of it.

I think he seems to have his mind elsewhere this season which has affected his performance. Not sure what has happened just speculating.

I think he is a professional and trains well and takes football seriously - maybe too seriously with over training at times.

It's a weird one. He does seem to over train to the point it's a detriment so it's not like he's not taking his footy seriously. I was going to say maybe the outside marking stuff takes a lot of his mental energy but so does studying and we generally applaud players who do more than just sit and play video games or gamble/party in their spare time.

Maybe the difference comes in the form of the fame. He has an outsized profile compared to his on field achievements and normally once players reach the level of notorierty Smith has they're established stars on field and more able to take on that scrutiny and focus. Even then it can be a struggle. So Smith feels more pressure and he tries harder and then he rocks up to day one of pre season over loaded and injured and his whole season if off kilter and he tries to work hard to get back on track and does extra running after a game and the media sees that and it increases the focus and pressure on his performances and... so on.

Didn't you criticise Kane Cornes when he suggested the same thing?
More of an In Bruges guy?

Over training? Can't remember if it was on that.

Yes and Dermott Brereton said it too. They both reflected on their own experiences.

I think he just had a bad year 22yo and has been enormous . Ups and downs happen when you’re still learning.

                                Jon Ralph

Dogs emerge as frontrunner for pick 4

It comes as the Dogs emerge as an early favourite to trade up to the Suns? pick 4 with their offer of picks 10 and 17.

Melbourne also has a strong proposal with their first-rounder and two second-rounders, with both offers handing the Suns an extra 500 points for their academy picks.

But the Suns could trade back to 10 and 17 from pick 4 then field offers for pick 10, so could make even more of a windfall on the deal to accrue points.
