Re: 2021 Rolling List Management Discussion
Good synopsis of where we are at. Agree entirely.
Richards, Weightman, Scott, Duryea, Cordy have all played basically every game they are fit for and should/will be retained.
Garcia clearly is rated highly by the club and I see it, he gets retained.
Lipinski should leave. I don't really see him asserting his place in our side and he will get a better contract and more gametime elsewhere, he should want to leave, but otherwise, retain as he is good depth.
Young should absolutely want out, unless we use him in a clearly defined role for the rest of the season. Even if he plays every game this year but continues to play 4 different positions a game that says to me that we don't really have a specific role for him and that makes him very easy to drop long term. I think he'll be a decent player, but probably not with us.
I was advocating for us letting Wallis go about 3 years ago, I've always been sceptical on the longevity of his role up forward, and do not rate him at all elsewhere. He is good enough to play elsewhere, and I really hope someone does offer him something because I'm not sure my heart could take delisting him.
Jong is lovely, but never available. For the good of his life, and for the good of not always having a dead spot on our list, surely he retires.
Butler i am meh on. Haven't seen enough to made an educated call but what I have heard from posters on here is not exactly glowing. Like always if we retin him it has to be for a reason though, we almost have a philosophy that we default to players deserving new deals even when they aren't good and we have no intention of playing them. If we realistically don't see him playing 5+ games next year then cut him. He is not a raw enough prospect that we have to invest 2+ years of nothing to turn him into something.
Martin can gracefully retire. Thanks for the proof of concept Stef, enjoy retirement. Should've come here 4 years ago when we first offered him a spot.
Khamis I am 5050 on. Apart from half a game against the woeful Kangaroos we have shown no intention to play him. If anybody is in a position 3 years into their career where they aren't even pushing for games then I am generally inclined to call it. Like Butler unless we legitimately see him playing multiple games next year and taking that big step forward then bad luck.
Cavarra and Hayes can be cut. No idea why we retained them, we clearly have zero interest in playing them. Absolute waste of time and list spots. I am genuinely pissed off that we relisted them when we did and nothing that has happened afterwards has vindicated that call.
Sweet is fine, and gets retained I guess. We should not be making any plans for him to be the number one ruck yet though, heis clearly on the list as a backup. Again though, if we aren't willing to play him when we need to use our backup ruckman (like most of last year) then don't sign him.
Roarke I like, and am happy to keep around for another rookie contract (he must be the poorest 8 year AFL player ever). At least we seem happy to play him when it's his turn (unlike all the other rookies). Also happy to cut.
Basically once players are hitting their 3rd season if they aren't even in the frame for selection then whats the point, list spots are gold and we do not turn them over enough. Cut half those guys, get a key defender or two and give them 2 years to develop into something worth using. If they aren't close then cut and restart.
