What do you think of West? And relative to his competition eg Garcia? Where do see him in our team in say season 2024?

It's the price you pay for 150+ pages of content G.

You have the luxury of not knowing what I know; that a trade Dunkley thread, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, *saves lives*. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall.
      TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at WOOF, you want Josh Dunkley in that midfield -- you need him in the midfield.

          Yes. Where doe he play?

We have a glut of midfielders and he can't play outside.
He's best chance is as a forward. We are playing three talls (BRuce, Naughton, Marra/English) so that leaves three spots + bench.
Weightman is a lock, that's two spots left. One of VDM/Garcia plays as we seem to value the pressure role, that's one spot. Hannan has played every game he's fit - then there's the rotating mid who goes forward (Bont/Treloar/Dunkley).
Daniel/JJ seem to play as the 'everywhere men' and we haven't even considered utility foot soldiers like Scott, McNeill and Roarke.
I just can't find a place for him and I don't think anyone has him in their finals team.

Is the argument whether he has a future, or whether he plays AFL in 2021?

I think he has a bright future, probably playing as an inside mid.

BUT I don't think he plays again this year, even as a small forward.

I'd like to keep him because I see a bit of Jack Viney about him and he has played the 'hard forward' role well at VFL level.
In a different cycle of development he'd be playing for us now, but even as an inside mid in the next few years he's going to have to contend with Bont/Macrae/Dunkley/Smith being the first four rotated through the middle, with Treloar having four years after this one as well (who knows if he makes it to the end in one piece).

That's without considering a fringe, unexpected type makes the jump. Caleb Daniel has played in the centre at times when we need his kicking there and I really think Garcia is going to be a beauty for us. We may even have a FS in the next few years who is shorter than 6 foot 5 to consider.

Only really Bedendo & Butler to move down. Not sure I’d like tapping these kids for a demotion though. But it might be needed if spots to picks on Darcy is going to be an issue with total spots open and/or Power wanting more flexibility. (Knowing we could do it after) Still don’t really see the need, unless we really don’t like the rookie draft. My guess, no moves on this front.
I wonder what this means for Roarke who is in year 25 on the rookie list.

Wasn't Roarke redrafted as a rookie for this year?

If so he can stay there for another 2 years without issue.

He may have a special eker category. Could he be the longest serving continuous rookie list player at a single club.

I think West looks great. He's only a baby and - for reasons discussed earlier this year (relative to him being dropped EVERY time he plays in an AFL side that loses) - has not really been able to show his best at AFL level.

He's an inside mid. I think Garcia - if that's the comparison - is more a utility mid who can go in/out/high forward etc...Garcia isn't as much of a ball winner but is an excellent outside receiver...Garcia has a nice balance to his game whereas West always looked to me like the 'wheels were spinning' (in his head) whenever he played forward.

West will be fine. I'm actually pretty happy with his progress and I'm not sure why the bar is so high for such a young and inexperienced player (because Bailey Smith jumped in and stuck the landing I guess?) but having a 20-year old on your list (or is he 21? Either way, he's just getting started) who has had a taste at AFL level whilst showing the ability to pretty consistently win the ball at VFL level is a nice problem to have...

It's not his fault he's Scott's boy or that he was taken father-son. So - he's not quite ready to be the number 1 inside mid today? That's OK - Dunks and Liber can do that and he can come in behind them. His chances will come - maybe this year, maybe not (there is a LONG way to go before it is all played out!) - and from what I can tell he has been working hard and will be in a great position to take them.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

                        Thanks mjp. Good analysis.

Notwithstanding that, do you think his manager might be advising him to have a look around other clubs?

His manager shouldn't look to shop him around as he has a contract until the end of next year and I don't think it's as simple as he would get much more game time at others just yet.
He should be telling him to get fitter, improve his running over the summer and to focus on becoming a better kick. These improvements would give him a better chance of playing senior football with us.
If he is in great form at the VFL level next year then the opportunities will present themselves either with us or by other clubs.

He's goign to be similar to Viney. The real question is will he be patient enough to wait for a spot?
I don't think he gets regular (or many) games while Libba is still playing good football. By all accounts Scotty isn't happy

I think we need a cheap insurance policy to cover Bruce next year.

Three candidates on the FA list:

Sam Day (would need to be two years and ok money. Not a huge goal kicker, can also play defence)
Tim O’Brien (would need lots of years and ok money)
Tom Lynch (Crows) (30yo DFA, one year, not much money. Kicked over 30 goals in a season 4 times, not recently)

                              Any interest?
