    Re: 2023 Draft Watch

I watched a bit of it. Watson didn’t overwhelm me however I’d trust our club to know rather than my 10 mins watching on a tiny screen.
    Josie :)

    Our day will come
    And we'll have everything.
    We'll share the joy
    Just like '54 again.

Just returned from Ikon. I was highly underwhelmed by Watson today. I thought he was better by foot than he displayed today. I was reminded how small he is.

Sanders is the most consistent player of the year, with very strong hands in close. His Centre clearance near the start of the last quarter was my highlight of the day.

The “Norm Smith” winner today Will Brown showed some nice skills but I’m not sure how hard he is. Looked silky when under no pressure.

McGee Gamilberti had a very large (and loud!) female cheer squad sitting just behind me. He’s a bit small and didn’t do much today.

Edwards was quieter than previous weeks but as GVGjr, what he did do stood out. He seemed to be in the right position many times but ignored by his teammates.

For Eastern, I hadn’t seen much of Tyson Sruk but was impressed with him in the middle - fearless and hard at it, with a goal in the last desperate to keep them in the game. Brayden Leplanche in the back line also was interesting to me - a pest and not afraid to put his body on the line, plus a good long kick out of trouble.

My observation of the Coates League, particularly as you get to the pointy end of the season when you are competing with team mates for an AFL career, that you witness very little teamwork and team play, it’s all about adding to your highlight reel. The coaches are also measured in how many players are drafted so they dont appear to care.

Seems like Watson is on the slide, I'm surprised.

Ha yep, the shots on goal from low percentage positions in the second half were quite noticeable.
I suspect Watson slips as he now seem 'mostly' a small forward rather than the utility roles he was undertaking earlier in the season.

I suspect Windsor & Leake are later bolters, ditto Edwards as you mentioned. Ceiling seems more important than pure production for u18s anyways.

Yes it’s all about how much they can improve and if they can. If they have reached their Ceiling in under 18s they are pretty much done .
Skinny, tall kids are a great chance to get chosen as they have more to come as they put on size.

Both Windsor and Leake should be rated highly
If we were to land pick 4 I really wonder if we would be more interested in McKercher or Watson? Given some of the players we have been linked to I suspect Watson might be our preference.

I really don't think McKercher lasts to our pick. I think he could be the third or 4th player called on the night, probably vying with Curtin for pick 3 (Reid, Walter bid & 1 and 2).
I'm starting to think Watson could slide. Weirdly, we've shown our hand this year so I suspect Sanders could be our man.
It sounds like the Hawks love-affair with Duursma is real.

I was at Optus yesterday for the colts GF.

Likewise, if you were judging Curtin on his GF performance, well, the words 'possible rookie selection' would be bandied about.

He's got more runs on the board than that though (like Watson) and will still be a top selection.

Big winners on the day for me were O'Driscoll who showed more than something after a pretty underwhelming season and Van Rooyen who competed really hard/fought through a bit of adversity which was probably the first time I'd seen him do that.

Players like Hayes and Angove as well...small but just SO CLEVER and sometimes watching footy I wonder what we have lost with players like these unlikely to ever receive opportunities.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

McGee-Gamilberti is interesting. He can keep good small forwards quiet, and he's damn near Dogs royalty.

North's compo package received - 3 end of first round picks, two next year.
Th two picks next year are to be reviewed but - get this - north can trade then this year.

Looks like North are in the box seat to trade up to pick 4 now.
