    Re: 2023 List Management Thread

The Herald Sun's current contract estimates are $725-$825K for English and $800-900K for Naughton. Hopefully neither will require too much of an increase.

I'm guessing Naughton will be more likely to sign a shorter contract (say 2 years) to get him though to free agency and re-assess his options from there.

As I’ve said, I don’t understand WCE going after these guys. It’s the exact opposite move to make. It makes no sense to me to chase either as contracted players from a WCE perspective. So I can’t help. I wouldn’t even entertain it if I was them.

The Sydney rumour the other week sounds more ominous and realistic than WCE to me. But let’s be honest, a lot of clubs would want them and will sound them out. It’s just a matter of them staying for a good salary, or leaving for too high an offer. Let’s hope it’s the former.

Yeah, WCE should be trading dudes OUT to get more picks, and just cop it for 2-3 years.

Well we have 2-3 other tall forwards (JUH, Lobb, Bruce) + Darcy and Croft coming along. We recruit a decent Soldo-ish ruck or start making our side a bit...'Sweet'er and spread the wealth elsewhere, try and poach someone with that money for the defence. Would be a good trade , they may ask for some later picks i.e 2nd rounder in 2023 we would save 800K . Keep Hannan for another year whilst JUH development . Have Darcy and croft in the fwd line, with some chop out time with english and Bonts fwd .

Baily Smith more time in the middle.

Get some early picks to find gun midfielders

Negatives is someone needs to take the #1 defender. Not sure if Hannan is capable of that

PR? The "Big Clubs" beat their chest when they land some bum from the end of another teams list and their mindless supporters beat their drums with them. West Coast are in a world of hurt right now, signing the best Free Agent out there would huge for them to build hope and future on. I can see them making a big play at someone out there and I'm sure Tim or Naughton are at the top end of their list.

Fair I guess - they are both 'sorta' from Perth and West Coast are:
1/. At the bottom of the ladder with 'some' draft capital.
2/. It is assumed they have $ to spend under the cap.

But can you think for a minute how freaking miserable it would be to be playing there right now? And if you think that undergoing a 5-year rebuild during the prime of your career is something AFL players dream of, well...they don't. When they get drafted, they want to play 'A game'. Just one. When they've done that, they want to cement themselves in the side. Up to this point, most of them seriously could care less about win-loss. But once they are in and WINNING, well...they want to keep winning. They want to play in finals, they want to be in the battle for the flag.

Yes - games like ANZAC Day are a pull for sides like the Pies but players want to play FINALS. They want to impact in FINALS.

West Coast will have to pay MASSIVE overs to get anyone right now (though they are too arrogant to understand that) and they really don't have much to offer back for players who are UNDER CONTRACT (read Naughton and English).

If they offer pick #1 and pick #19 and pick #1 in 2024 for Naughton - and that's what it would take - how would they rebuild the rest of their side?? What is the Hungry Jacks Franchise worth as payment outside the cap?

On the trade scenario I am with BT.

It is absolutely the opposite of what they need.

They could/should look at splitting their picks to get multiple quality talent and probably trade out any of the older players with currency.

Overall our list is in a solid position. We've got a good blend of taller players and we'll most likely we will bring Croft into that mix as well and on top of that we appear to have recruited 2 players this year with an eye on the future by adding both O'Donnell and Poulter.

If we were to have about 8 players depart at the end of the season we could also potentially move JOD and Poulter to the senior list.

We will need to be mindful of an ageing list but it's certainly not panic stations. So much of our list management approach will depend on how and where we finish at the end of the season but we have plenty of options.

Not sure why we’d move Poulter or JOD. Both are taking up only rookie spots which base salaries aren’t included in the TPP. We have to make calls on Roarke, Scott & McNeil in three months (delist or promote) so I’d focus on those guys and if we need to rebalance the main list by moving two spots from the rookie list to the main list. Hopefully we can move on seven or eight and bring in some targeted needs based players and some kids too.

We will need to hold open probably (at least) 5 or maybe 6 spots at the National Draft to allow use of all our picks/points on Croft also which is a key consideration. We could elevate them between drafts, but really, unless it’s a shallow draft then keep them where they cost us no main list spots while they get the same cash that’s not counted in the TPP.

That’s my thinking anyway. Probably cut McComb since we are talking rookies too.

Especially JOD who is a category B rookie and not even really taking a list spot. Would be madness to upgrade him at this point.

We haven't been that keen to take players late in the draft so upgrades might be worth considering.

We may need to open up a few spots to match a Croft bid. The picks vs open list spot rule is back in force after we lucked out with Marra and the AFL suspended the rule during COVID
