Scored free tickets to Cranberries/Lenny Kravitz yesterday. Right up the front.

The Cranberries were fantastic, super tight, played the hits, Lucy has lost nothing in her voice and they created quite a serene atmosphere last night, then finished with Salvation & Zombie back to back to get the crowd up. Excellent set.

Lenny Kravitz has a fantastic voice and is an excellent showman, but he is definately rock star first, musician second. The sort of show I'm glad I'd seen but wouldn't pay for, especially to see again. His softer moments had even the hardcore fans looking around - his rockier moments are definately what the crowd want to hear, with Fly Away & Are You Gonna Go My Way the standouts musically & from a crowd participation perspective.

For anyone interested, 'famed' Melbourne cover band The Voodoo Surf Gods are reforming for two gigs this year. This Saturday, at the Manhattan Hotel in Ringwood, and May 19th at the Hallam Hotel (one of their regular gigs back in the day). As far as cover bands go, they have quite the reputation for being one of the best.

Reason I know is that one of my work mates played (and will be playing at these gigs) keyboard in the band. Should be a fun couple of shows!

Saw Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde) at the Spiegeltent on Saturday night. She looked every bit the wild rock'n'roll gypsy and at 55, still had a great voice. Even treated us to some of her poetry and anecdotes between songs. Great stuff.

Tim Rogers played a gig at Commonwealth Reserve in Willy last month which went down really well. He played Willy RSL last year and the P.A. went during the opening song 'Paragon Cafe'; i thought 'Shit, this is going to be interesting'. So what did Rogers do? Simply stepped off the stage into the audience and kept singing. You could hear a pin drop. A wonderful night.

Did anyone else go and see Elbow at Festival Hall last night? I thought the gig was like a 50 over match - started all guns blazing (highlights included 'The Birds', 'Grounds for Divorce', 'The Bones of You'), then lost its way in the middle overs (too many ballads), then finished in a blaze of glory ('Station Approach' and 'One Day Like This' nearly raised the roof off). Guy Garvey is a very charismatic frontman and his banter in between songs was very enjoyable as well.

Musically they were flawless - it was almost like listening to them on CD - I guess playing together for 22 years will do that.

All in all a fantastic gig but I wish they eased off a little on the ballads in the middle 3rd of the gig - would have loved them to play 'Leaders of the Free World' and 'Forget Myself' in particular.

Really enjoyed Brian Setzer's Rockabilly Riot on Monday night. Good crowd, loved seeing the old rock n roll outfits. I didn't know much of the first half, but the Stray Cats set with Slim Jim Phanton on drums ws great!! Another highlight was the 'triple double bass off' with the older bass player, the younger bass player from Melbourne & Brian Setzer all showing what they could do on the double bass.

Tomorrow night my wife and I are going to Faulty Towers...the dining experience. Should be a hoot. I am a huge Basil fan.

Was amazing on Tuesday too, the young bass player was phenomenal wasn't he? Great to see Brian live, an incredible showman and talent.

Got a bit excited that Flight of The Conchords announced an Australian tour yesterday, keen on booking tickets asap before I realized it was in July....im in South Africa then, dammit.

Oh well, im sure it won't be as awesome as I think it will be.......I hope.

The Splendor in the Grass line-up is pretty impressive, highlighted by the return of one of the greatest bands of the 90's...the Afghan Whigs. You didn't think I meant the Smashing Pumpkins did you, those 2nd rate losers.

Anyway looking forward to a Whigs sideshow announcement.

The further Corgan climbed up his own arse the worse they got
