Got there just in time to see Monster Magnet - Dave Wyndorf is an old school dude type frontman, did well for an early set. Spacelord had the crowd going, it was a set of hits as Dave loves to play what the crowd want to hear.

Then it was off to see Social Distorition, first tour of Australia for 34 years! They knew how to rock, very tight for an old school punk band, formed "when punk was dangerous" as they announced themselves. Glad to have seen them.

Next it was Primus, and I was finally seeing Les Claypool in the flesh(!). It was a semi-religious experience, he was better live than recorded and they are writing an album now - will definately see them next time they're out. Unbelieveable.

Was to the side of the stage after a drink or two and caught most of Slash's set. Was not a huge Gunners fan, but the energy and the willingness to play the classics (they stuck to the Appetite for Destruction stuff more than anything new or the solo album). It did become a big of a crowd singalong in the end which really works as a festival set. Enjoyable.

After a few drinks, I cought a bit of Slayer (18! Marshall cabinets on stage, technically brilliant but a bit too heavy for my tastes) and One Day as a Lion (Zac from RATM, again too hip hop for my taste). QOTSA were on and I had my dilemma stay for their set (I love Kyuss & early QOTSA) or see Zombie. After the first two songs (off the Album R thank god) I was happy, they then followed with new material which just shows how much they've nosedived as a band since Nick Oliveri's departure.

So I went to see Rob Zombie, expecting little and being utterly blown away by the best frontman I have ever seen bar none. Rob is simply incredible and their set was punctuated by hits that really do need to be played live and loud to be fully appreciated. I went from "I don't mind them" to "oh my god I need to see them again, they are phenominal" in one short set. Simply awesome.

After Zombie I caught the Melvins which were cool (two drumkits used to duel each other insteand of just complement each other, take note Wolf & Cub). Iron Maiden got preachy for me but their stage was huge, then saw the Bronx who are simply a kick arse rock band but by that stage the draw of a 10 minute jog home was too much to resist. I ended up missing F**ked Up who I was planning to see.

All in all the music was possibly the best I have seen at any festival but the festival itself (33k at the showgrounds) was undercatered for the punters. A bit more planning and it could be an epic day.
    Glad you enjoyed Soundwave Mofra!!

My husband went too and this was his report:

Rob Zombie was fantastic. He saw White Zombie 16 years ago, loved Rob's show. Was rapt that he played some White Zombie songs as well as a good selection of his solo material. His highlight was Slayer - they played songs he hasn't seen them play before. Iron Maiden played the exact same set as the concert we saw on 23rd February, so that was a bit disappointing. Overall he liked all the bands he saw.

Re: Recent Gigs & Upcoming ones

Soundwave was a solid day - glad I wore the heaviest leather jacket I had, it was a touch cold

Started at Sevendust - mates of mine wanted to see them - sound a little patchy with the wind (which would be a recurring theme for outdoor stages throughout the day) but if you were into them then there would've been nothing wrong with their set

Bullet for my Valentine next on the Main Stage - actually not bad, didn't expect too much bt they were entertaining enough

Stone Sour was next - Corey (of Slipknot fame) surprised me with his lack of rockstar getup...he just looked like a regular dude (albeit with heaps of tatts) you'd see down at the local. They sounded ok

      Primus were funny as always.

I endured 30 seconds to Mars to get a good spot for Slash - they sucked more than I imagined they would. Leto has an intensely annoying stage presence, and their music (IMO) is pathetic - not worthy of Leto's 'jump mutha____' attitude on stage. What happened to the guy from Fight Club?

Slash rocked it - almost the highlight of my day. I like Myles Kennedy, he's got as humble a stage presence you can get for singing in a rock band with who he does.

I saw about 10 minutes of Slayer - looked intense, and sounded good from the top of that second arena they were on - I'm not a fan, but from what I saw they sounded very good, and the massive crowd was up for it.

Coheed & Cambria were a bit heavier than I imagined - I've got the last two albums, but I only knew one of the songs played, and they were all real loud and heavy - which isn't a bad thing at all. They sounded good.

Then caught the second half of the QOTSA set - my 3rd fave band of all time disappointed me a bit, but I blame the weather mostly - the sound from a bit back was very patchy.

I ignored Maiden (I saw their first song so I can say 'I saw them') and went to see Protest the Hero on stage 6 - easy the highlight of my day. These Canadians play the most extravagant form of prog jazz metal punk (I just made up a genre there..PJMP) without breaking a sweat. Humans shouldn't be able to do what these guys do, and they do it nonchalantly. I was blown away.

And I didn't get sick - good day

Better line up last year with Faith No More headlining.

Re: Recent Gigs & Upcoming ones

Seems odd to past this after a thorough review of Soundwave (which I will miss this year) but am headed to Melbourne this weekend for the Glaswegian pop of Belle & Sebastian.

Seems the early bird often gets tickets interstate before they announce subsequent gigs in their own nest, but it's a good excuse to get over and catch up with mates. Will be flying home to finish my long weekend at Future music.

Got a cardigan you can borrow if you need
Seriously, I've even got one in Doggies colours I wear to the football. I also own at least 2 Camera Obscura records.

Got the Hold Steady on Friday night. I've heard they've been playing shows sans keys which will be interesting if true. I like the muscular sound of their early stuff but there are a few songs that really rely on the keys.

Also got a ticket to see Propagandhi in May.

              You dirty, dirty hipster

Seriously, wish I were going to this one; just couldn't scrounge together the $90. Going to have to make do with The Holidays on April somethingth.

Got tickets to Michael Franti in a few weeks. Should be good, take the lady and all that.

Iron Maiden the other week was great, finally gt to see them live - blown away. Lacked a bit of the hype from the last tour which I missed but it was still pretty special for me anyway.

There are quite a few I'd like to go and see coming up, but probably need to save my pennies.

We went to the Somewhere Back In Time tour in 2008 and also to the Final Frontier concert 2 weeks ago. IMO the set list was much better in 2008 as it was songs from the first 7 albums only, and personally I prefer their old stuff. However, they do put on an awesome stage show and I did enjoy both concerts. Glad you finally got to see them live!! From what they were saying at Soundwave, now that they have Ed Force One, they'll be coming to Australia more frequently.

Also attending this. Haven't seen them before and don't have an in depth knowledge of their back catalogue, so I may struggle, but from mates reports they are very good live.

I saw them twice on the last tour and the only way I can describe is as Rock n Roll evangelism. I only hope it lives up to that, but the loss of their keyboard player from that tour is big as he was a fantastic stage presence.

Damn it I would have loved to borrow a cardigan!

The Belle and Sebastian gig was very good, brought down only by the reality that they can't play them all and there will be some disappointment of them not playing something you want to hear. Highlights were Boy with the Arab strap and a killer cover of "Victoria" by the Kinks.

Future music on Monday back in Adelaide really took the gloss off it though, especially the Chemical Brothers set and closely followed by Mark Ronson. Was super sad that Mark Ronson didn't do Valerie after seeing this version on a Glastonbury highlights show though:

A friend who went to Golden Plains said they were very good, said Murdoch was crowd surfing and all, which isn't very twee of him (I'll stop the stereotyping now).
Good to hear some Kinks represented, love Ray Davies.

I saw Ed Keupper and Mark Dawson doing Electrical Strom on friday night at the spiegeltent. We sat about 5 metres from Ed and Mark and what a gig it was!

That's all I've got to say, just what a gig! One of the best I've ever seen.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Enjoyed. I struggled to put names to songs as I only started going through their stuff properly about two days beforehand but it was good nonetheless. Craig Finn (?) is certainly a different front man to the norm. Unfortuneatly my four favourite songs by them (Hot Fries, Slapped Actress, One for the Cutters and Both Crosses) didn't get a run but I know enough of the rest to get by. Would probably go see them again, especially as I now have an even better knowledge of their songs.
