its the total opposite, what happens when he starts non performing or gets "homesick" did they learn nothing from Oliver?
Or when Freo gets in his ear and says "you need a fresh start come play for us" and Melbourne has no option but to deal, or waste money on a non performing player?

I think you're the very first person here to suggest it's to a clubs detriment to have a player contracted come trade time.

It's one thing if he struggles on field and it becomes a salary dump, a risk in any long term contract, but if he decides he wants to go home then it's up to Freo or whoever to pay and get him out.

I think were both saying the same thing in a different way:
its more that its 9 years. of course time will tell, but 9 years is by far and away an excessively long contract, which lets be honest as were going through with JUH, what if its a "seeded" non performance as part of engineering a trade? If a player wants to leave a player wants to leave.

          Sam Edmund reports:
Kozzie Pickett has signed a whopping nine-year $12 million contract to stay at Melbourne. The Demons are refusing to comment, but the club will announce the deal this morning. Pickett becomes the longest contracted player in the AFL through to 2034–a big relief for the Dees

Crazy money for Kozzie. We will all have to start accepting that this is the new norm.

CLUBS IN HUNT FOR POWER STAR

MILES Bergman has at least five Victorian clubs hunting him as the Port Adelaide gun takes time to consider his future.

The versatile 23-year-old's value has been further boosted in recent weeks with a move into the midfield, with Bergman a standout in the Power's win over Greater Western Sydney.

He has five potential suitors lining up with interest, including the Western Bulldogs, Melbourne and Essendon, as well as Carlton if Tom De Koning departs and opens up a first-round compensation pick, and St Kilda.

The Bulldogs are in the mix for Bergman and are chasing Zak Butters for next year, while Demons assistant Nathan Bassett has links to Bergman having coached him at Port Adelaide. The Bombers have two first-round picks in play this year, with Bergman in their preferred age demographic.

As AFL.com.au revealed last month, the Power have put forward a super long-term deal to retain Bergman, with the Victorian weighing the eight to nine-year deal.

The lucrative contract includes the capacity to sign on for two more years and get to free agency at the end of 2027 and then have the option of activating the next longer-term deal of six-plus years after that.

Collingwood chased Bergman strongly two years ago before he re-signed with the Power but the Pies have not been as active in the chase for the young Power star this time around. He is now five appearances away from reaching his 100-game milestone.

I don't m,id Bergman as a player but 5 Victoria clubs being interested seems to indicate I'm missing something about him.

                  Any interest in this lot?.

Speaking on AFL.com.au’s trade and draft show Gettable, Twomey named five former top-10 picks - including the Roos' 2020 No.3 pick Will Phillips, Essendon's Elijah Tsatas (No.5, 2022), Fremantle's Neil Erasmus (No.10, 2021) and Will Brodie (No.9, 2016) and Geelong's Jhye Clark (No.8 2022) - amongst 10 midfielders who could be looking elsewhere for the guarantee of more senior game time.

Depends how one dimensional they are.

We're already throwing Libba around to fit in all of Treloar, Bont, Freijah, Kennedy, Richards and to a much lesser extent Sanders, Harmes and West. And looking to add a Butters type recruit. I think someone like Clark would probably struggle pretty hard to fit into our mid mix and far as I'm aware isn't an adept forward or back.

Perhaps Phillips as a BP and Tsatas because he has pace.

We already have the likes of Garcia, Gallagher and Poulter so we don't really need more depth players unless they could step up and cover a position for us.

Yeah and how much theyd cost.

I don't mind Tsatas, he was really good in his draft year, but hasn't come on.

Never a bad thing to have more pace. If he could play wing and/or pressure forward until a midfield spot opens up and was cheap, worth a shot. Knowing the Bombers they'd want our first round pick for him though.
