'Footy makes me most happy': Pull home won't sway Power gun's decision
Zak Butters says he'll put footy over family when deciding his long-term future

        By AAP with staff writer

PORT Adelaide's Zak Butters will put footy over family when deciding his long-term future at season's end.

Butters is under contract at Port until the end of the 2026 season but the Power and their rivals have already tabled multi-million dollar offers.

The Victorian-born dynamo, who has won the Power's past two club champion awards, will weigh his options at the end of the season.

"I will go back and have a good think about it in the off-season," Butters told reporters on Wednesday.

"When I probably get to sit down and actually think about things a bit more and you're not in the hustle and bustle of footy and trying to win and trying to compete and trying to get better, you can sit back and think about it.

"And probably chat to a few people about it as well, but no particular timeline."

As revealed on AFL.com.au's trade and draft show Gettable last month, the dual All-Australian has been offered the biggest deal in AFL history with the Power tabling a two-year extension with an option to extend it by a further six years in a bid to ensure Butters re-signs beyond his 2026 contract.
Butters said the pull of his family in Melbourne wouldn't outweigh football factors.

"There's a number of things - family, friends ... but the number one thing for me is footy," the 24-year-old said.

"I am here to play footy, I am here to do that and footy is the top priority.

"Family is good, friends are good. But footy makes me most happy so that is always my top priority.

"Mum and dad pretty much just always say do what makes you happy ... they're not too fussed."

Butters is averaging a career-high 27.7 disposals a game this year as pundits try and predict his future.

"There is a lot of noise about it ... it is what it is," he said.

"To be honest, I haven't really thought about it too much lately. I think other people probably think about it more than I probably do.

"But right at the moment, the season is very much alive for us.

"I know we have to get a lot of things right and do a lot of good things but while it's alive, it's alive - and that excites me.

"I don't think I am going to rush ... it's a big decision but I am committed and I am in (at Port)."

"I have been lucky enough to be at this club for a while now and be part of some pretty successful teams," Butters said.

"We probably haven't got the pinnacle which I live and die by, I want to get there as quick as I can and be in that spot.

"But I have also been lucky to be in a very good team for a long time so I won't forget that either."

He's an interesting and skilled prospect and you have to wonder why he has fallen out of favour.
He's got a heap of experience and his best football was quite good.

Do I remember Florent turning the ball over badly early in the season and costing them a game? I don't think he has revered since.

Florent and Bergman(even more so) are definitely players we should be interest in.

From what I have seen his is faster, more elusive and does most of his work at ground level.

Nah he’s the opposite to Cody, completely a ground level focused player.

Bailey would be close to the best fit in the league for our side right now, love this rumour. Going to the be hard to pry him out but we owe Brisbane some payback and I’m sure we could pay him a LOT more than them - they won’t want to lose him but realistically he’s in a position of strength for Brisbane (Raynor, Lohmann etc) and they’re going to need to prioritise big money for the Ashcrofts & potentially Oscar Allen etc

It’s a really smart target, he’d be worth a lot more to us than Brisbane, pre-agent etc

Bailey is exactly the type of player we need forward of centre. Get it done and with him and Cody in the side I'll almost get over my hobby horse regarding quality around the flanks!

If I was in charge at Port Adelaide I'd be concerned about what Butters is saying. He's after success. My sense is that Port's window is closing, not opening and success for Butters is more likely to be had elsewhere.

Were I Sam Power I'd be going hard, and I'm confident that's exactly what he's doing.

Surely the family can tell him that his chances of football success would be enhanced by playing a few years with prime Bontempelli and with a still developing Sam Darcy to deliver the ball too.

Would love Bailey. He’s exactly what we’re missing.

Why is Hardwick such a wanker

DAMIEN Hardwick has cheekily warned Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge to stay in his lane after confirmation on Thursday that star midfielder Matt Rowell would remain with Gold Coast for a further two years.

I don't like Hardwick either but I don't really have any issues with:

"Luke should just be mindful of looking after his own players a little bit," Hardwick said with a chuckle before adding he was "only joking".

"We're not going to put our head in the sand, we understand players are doing that (talking to rivals) and we're doing that at the moment as well.

"We've got some really exciting players that we're talking to. We understand that's the industry.

"It's not something I think any coach feels overly comfortable about, but we're big boys, we understand that."
