Rhylee is only 21, and by the time Libba's most likely winding down he'll be 23 and ready to go. It's our challenge to try and hang onto him because he will be a good inside midfielder at AFL level when he gets his chance.

I agree with this. He is still very young, only in his third season of AFL with the second season being the covid write-off. He is not getting to play in his preferred position at AFL level.

I remember being very frustrated with Hunter in his first few seasons, as he made similar dumb/selfish mistakes to Rhylee. I don't think we should be writing him off after a handful

Nah. Cheap lunches at bowls club when at Windy Hill and all the planes to can spot at Tulla. Plus he gets every September off. Pretty sweet deal.

I hope you're right but I'm not seeing it. At least not as an elite inside midfielder like Libba. I think Garcia, Dunks or Smith are more likely to feature in the engine room as Libba winds down. Rhylee probably more a depth player going forward. Thats no indictment on him. It's just that the midfield dept is so strong.

It's hard to see because it's not happening. Libba was bloody good when he was blooded as a younger player, but he was only able to show that in lieu of actually getting the opportunities to do so.

Rhylee couldn't have come to the club at a worse time for someone who wanted early games. We have a stacked midfield of inside oriented players meaning he has to think about being a forward in the big leagues, or playing a more outside oriented role. But he can only show what he can show as a forward or wherever we put him, and that's just the lot of fringe players until they get a chance to play in their preferred position.

It's an interesting change in dynamic that's occurred in recent years, players have opportunity to move to where they think they can play in their best positions and don't want to just carve out careers where they can and bide their time until their true opportunity arises. That's cool, and if Rhylee thinks he's better served elsewhere that's cool too.

However, he's a complete psycho at the footy, extremely strong, has good hands and albeit looking a touch short is still 182cm. Dunks and Smith aren't his competition, Garcia maybe is but I'm not as enamoured with him as others are (if Rhylee pulled the shit by hand Garcia has these past games the board would be going completely nuts), so it's just strange that we'd write him off or trade him if we don't have to. A couple of preseasons from now we'll be glad we didn't if we don't.

I think if Rhylee makes it then it's as a forward. He's got a few tricks and his one-on-one work is actually pretty nice.

Of course, that begs the question if there's a spot for him there either, but I think it gives him a better shot with his skill set.

Not being a smartarse, why can't he be a midfielder if given the opportunity? He's still very young, and has midfielder attributes.

Another way of asking the question, why is he a forward and not a midfielder? Cody is five cm shorter than him, and he's a forward. What does West deliver close to Cody?

I am surprised he is 182cm, I would have put him at the mid 170s at best. Maybe its because a bit like Daniel Rich he has a toddler body where his head is huge and his limbs are short, kind of the opposite to JUH.

It’s based on what I’ve seen him deliver in the seconds more than anything. I think that his attack around the footy is more on the ball carrier than the ball itself, and I’m not convinced he has it in him to reliably win his own ball consistently against AFL standard midfields when it’s nothing more than reasonable in the VFL.

But up forward I’ve seen buckets of potential. His attack on the ball carrier can be a strength rather than a mitigation, and he’s so strong through the hips and legs that he can’t really be moved one on one. Plus he’s a very nice finisher and has that thing where he constantly looks dangerous.

I would’ve played him ahead of Wallis and would look to give him a go when Hannan inevitably disappoints again.

I still tend to agree with this.

I had Rhylee pegged as a breakout player for this year and sadly that hasn't happened. I'm a little concerned by what I've seen at the top level in his few outings, and it does have me questioning if I've overrated him.

Without knowing him inside out I wonder how driven he is? There's no denying he's played some pretty selfish footy at times, which simply won't get you a gig in a Bevo side (nor should it). I've been really underwhelmed by what he's dished up in his few games this year, and even though it's only his third year, for smaller players/mids you really want to see more from them by year 3.

I'd consider playing him as a defender in 2022. We aren't flushed with good lockdown types and West is pretty strong 1-v-1. His lack of aerial game (in that he isn't a jumper like Duryea) might be a bit of a concern.

Still a fan of him as jeemak highlighted some of his strengths (courageous, strong, good hands) but I'm not as bullish as I was.

With Rhylee West I am not convinced at all.

If he was not a father/son would we still be keen to keep him.

For me I would let him go and get someone else on the list. I actually prefer the look of Ewan MacPherson in what I have seen at Footscray.
