Grizzly Bear at the corner this week was incredible, what an amazingly talented group of boys. I know it was only the first week of the year, but I can foresee that show topping the best shows of 2010 list!

I've been listening to Veckamatist this week. I really like some of it and some I'm not so sure of. I've only given it 2 or 3 spins though so it might grow.
Saw Future of the Left last night, they were as awesome as could be expected. Corner was packed out.
Two gripes, apparently if I took my empty 500ml Bulmer's bottle and smashed it into the face of everyone who spent half the gig holding up a camera or phone taking photos then I would be considered the criminal. Life is unjust. Also is it just me or is general gig etiquette slipping. The amount of people who forced their way into the no space in front of us 1 minute before the band started was unbelievable. Not to mention the guy throwing his beer around the crowd. Or maybe I'm just getting old and more filled with hate.

Give it a few more listens, it was a grower on me.

I think it depends on who is playing. I have been to some really civil gigs lately, Grizzly Bear was a full house of particularly well behaved fans. Being a girl who isn't very tall, I have a really low tolerance for meathead bogans who spill their beer and take their shirts off. How people can think it is ok to rub their sweaty chests on strangers I will never understand. The worst behaviour though comes from the same type of brute mentioned above; pushing girls out of the way to get closer to the stage, or even worse, use anybody's back as a platform to "crowd surf" (crowd surfing really is a concept that should be left in the last decade).
I try not to let idiots ruin my night though, I usually place myself somewhere comfortable where I have some space and if I'm not enjoying myself then I usually move!

No Underdog its not you.
I've been going to over age gigs for 13 years now, and I mean for half of those years that would mean a gig a week or every second week.
People just dont care about anyone anymore.
Thing that really really annoys me is people talking during the songs. like what the?
I didn't pay $70 to see Jarvis Cocker or $20 to see Kelly Stoltz or $80 odd to see Nick Cave to hear your freakin view on life and how your day was......

I was kind of comparing it to the last time FOTL played at the Northcote which was much more civil (aside from a couple who deserved my sharpened elbows as they tried to jump on my back repeatedly). Also coupled with the fact I was there with my very pregnant wife, who slipped out to the back of the room pretty quickly.
Maybe it's always been the way but yes mid 20's men with a skinful can make the night painful for a lotta people particularly girls. I'm in total agreement on the short thing and it should extend to all levels of public society where there isn't an immediate proximity to a large body of water and that goes double at festivals.

FOTL were amazing last night - full of energy, played almost everything they've released, had some decent stage banter, and Andy Falkous wandered through the front bar after the gig chatting to whoever wanted to say hello (he was nice enough to give me the story behind "Stand by Your Manatee" and without prompting gave me his dissertation on how Melbourne compares to other rock cities worldwide).
The etiquitte thing is changing a little, but up the front mosh etiquette was still in tact - hands down if there is a fall, elbows in when there's a crush, etc. The only gripe I had were the dickheads who push to the front and then just stand there whilst everyone around them is going nuts - if you want to just stand and watch, get away from the pit!

Or again maybe cause its im about to turn 31?
I didn't mean to turn this into a bitchfest but apparently I did. I'm 34 and in a similiar boat, the constant talking is painful, I yearn for the days when cameras were frowned upon. I had a guy standing behind me at Propagandhi last year yelling out constantly for them to play some stuff from the 90's when they were good. Dude you just paid $40 to abuse a band for playing songs off their last 3 albums....Why????
Hopefully the Weakerthans at the NTSC and Wilco at the Forum will restore my faith. Definitely not gigs for crowd surfing. (Although last night's gig did contain the world's first example of a man crowd surfing to silence and the passing of a fruit platter)

That right side of the corner hotel near the bar and toilets is always crap. As for the FOTL gig it was awesome. Good to see Mofra, the underdog and mrs underdog

Right in that back corner there's a little elevated bit that's not too bad for the short asses amomgst us......like me
Marching Orders are one of the best bands going around in Melbourne IMO. Always a great set from them, featured on the soundtrack for "Green Street Hooligans 2"
