Dave Grohl is a freaking monster on drums. As charismatic a frontman as he is, his frontman talent is 1% of his value on the skins. Looks like a late 90s version of Dave Wyndorf these days.

Ventured out to Flemington for the BDO yesterday.

Highlights were Kasabian, GirlTalk, the Decemberists and MUSE. Although not a fan Dizzee Rascal letting rip with 'Bonkers' was pretty cool too.

Paying for it now... I wish I was 21 again after a big day/ night out.

Re: Recent Gigs & Upcoming ones

I went to the Big Day Out too, and as it was my first time I didn't really know what to expect. It was brilliant.

Rocked up and my group went to see Miami Horror, who I didn't really pay any attention to. Then I checked out the Teleprompters, whose sound guys must be sacked. It was just distorted noise.

Then I went to the main arena and saw Karnivool, before listening to Mastadon as I was holding onto a fence spot for Kasabian. Karnivool were pretty good, Mastadon were average, but Kasabian were fantastic. Really fun and some great songs.

Then I saw the opening two songs of Eskimo Joe (Foreign Land and Inshalla) before bailing. Kav Temperley acts like he's this awesome rock star, he's not.

Then saw Passion Pit's last song (their big hit), not really my thing, and watched the Decemberists from afar, who were alright.

Checked out the first half of Rise Against's set, but left early to try and get in the D early for the Mars Volta and ultimately Muse.

As a result I caught all of Lily Allen's set, but am still unsure what she looks like as I was too close to the Blue stage to see her. Not really a fan of her music though.

The Mars Volta, one of the bands I was very keen to see, were a dissapointment. Their sound guys screwed up, meaning not only were they very quiet overall, but the vocals and guitar were barely hearable, while the keys worked for very little of the first two songs. On top of this, the crowd in the mosh were there for Muse and as a result refused to even budge during TMV, resulting in it being very frustrating for me, who wanted to move.

Then we listened to Powderfinger, who were average. Played too many new songs, and bernard Fannign was trying to sound like some hard nut swearing between songs. It didn't sound genuine, especially when you conider they are Australia's premier soft rock band, a band like the Living End would have been little more believable.

Then finally Muse came on. I was lucky enough to be about a metre from the fence in front of Chris (the bass player) and it was insane. They played a variety of songs from all their albums except Showbiz, with highlights being Plug in Baby, Time is Running Out, Hysteria, Unnatural Selection and closing number Knights of Cydonia. They also did a cover of Back in Black with Jet's Nic Cester on vocals.

I had a great day out, am not burnt at all and was drenched in sweat at the conclusion. Would definitely go again if the line up was good, only issue is I feel pretty tired (I slept until 1:30 today no problems), my ears are still ringing and I have my first pre-season session tonight.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

Re: Recent Gigs & Upcoming ones

Yesterday was also my first Big Day Out. Let's just say I want to buy tickets for next year already.

Bluejuice were pretty good. I don't really know their songs but it was still a decent start to the day. After Bluejuice I saw Kisschasy. They were ok, not my favourite band.

I then stayed at the Green Stage and waited for one of my favourite bands, The Temper Trap. They were one of the highlights of my day. The crowd was pretty crazy at the start, everyone pushed forward. It was fun though, Love Lost was probably my favourite song. I'm not sure if he even sang Sweet Disposition, all I could hear was the crowd. Crowd went off.

I listened to a bit of Eskimo Joe from outside the D sitting on the grass. I'm normally a fan of theirs but didn't feel like listening to them. After fighting my way into the D I ended up at the Hilltop Hoods. I'm not normally a massive fan of Hip Hop but I really enjoyed The Hilltop Hoods. They were the best with the crowd. After the Hilltop Hoods I was planning to go see Rise Against but the Hilltop Hoods got me in the mood for Dizzee Rascal. He started off slow but eventually got into it.

After Dizzee I was planning to see 10 mins or so of Lily Allen before leaving to see Jet. I ended up pretty much at the front and left straight away otherwise I would never have made Jet. Lucky I did, I didn't think the crowd would end. It was near impossible to get out of the D because the exit led you out into the massive group of people trying to get into the D. There was barely anyone at Jet when I got there so I got a great spot. It was the third time I've seen them and it was definitely the best one so far. They played it safe playing all their hits. They played 'Hey Kids' which I've only heard of once before (Green Day concert). Jet tied with the Temper Trap as my favourite performances of the day. After eating ridiculously overpriced food (you can't expect it not to be) I chilled on the grass listening to Powderfinger. They sounded good as usual, I just needed a rest after going crazy at Jet.

Muse were good. To be honest, I'm not a big fan and found it really hard to get into them because the lasers and the sound was so big I didn't really feel a part of it. All you could really do was stand back and admire. Everyone around me (not the diehard fans) spent the first half of the show watching security try and catch a drunk (I'm assuming) guy up on the roof and throwing bottles at people in the trees. I LOVE New Born though, definitely a personal highlight of Muse.

Their collaboration with Nic Cester who sang 'Back in Black' made me really excited for AC/DC-Wolfmother. I can't wait. I'm also looking forward to seeing Ross Noble (the comedian) in Werribee and the Good Vibrations festival. The only reason why I'm going to GVF is the Killers, so if they cancel I will be SHATTERED. I missed out on them last time at the V Festival because I wasn't 18. Fortunately I turn 18 in 3 days so I can go the GVF.

Overall it was the best day I can remember having, well worth the $150. Congratulations to you sir/madam if you've made it this far, I know I wouldn't have bothered reading it

Re: Recent Gigs & Upcoming ones

                So, Big Day Out..

I liked it. It had a lot of bands I wanted to see, and most lived up to my expectations, BUT, there seemed to be a HUGE influx of 13 year olds this year, and this made me very annoyed. They sat up on shoulders EVERYWHERE, so I couldnt see (yes, I realise this is standard festival behaviour, but its FLIPPING ANNOYING when you're trying to see a band you love and you've got some little underage skank in just her bra up on some 30 year olds shoulders RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. People need to pelt more bottles at the kids, seriously!) But anyway.

Bluejuice were good! I'm a fan of the onesies they were decked out in.

Kasabian- oh my god, best ever. Seriously, it was amazing. Huuuuuuge crowd for them though, and a fairly rough one too, up the front. When 'Fire' came on, everyone just lost their sh*t and went NUTS. Was so so so good.

Passion Pit- Saw a liiittle bit of Passion Pit, but I don't actually like them. They sounded better live than what I thought they would. Gabi disagrees, as a fan of Passion Pit, she was slightly dissapointed. She also says the mosh was crammed with 13 year olds, urghh.

Dizzee Rascal- I like Dizzee, and was up the back in the drinking section, and the crowd was HUUUUUUGE. I thought he was good live, fun to dance to, fun to sing to.

Calvin Harris- Ok so i'm a bit biased because i'm pretty much in LOVE with him, but he was so good, I would've preferred it if the band wasn't there, but they were still pretty good. Every single one of his songs went offfffff. Slightly shattered he didn't play "Merrymaking at my place", but i'll live. The things I would do to that man... anyway.

Saw bits and pices of The Temper Trap, Sam LaMore, Tame Impala, Karnivool.
Missed Silent Disco this year, shattered!

Drank too much, forgot to wear sunscreen, got mangled and crushed feet, lost my sh*t at how many young people were there (FOR GODS SAKE, MAKE IT 18+ OR SOMETHING, PLEASE?! EVEN 16+ WILL DO.) but an amazing day outweighs all of that!

Yeah but if you ban the 13 year olds, then you've got to ban the 16 year old girls with fairy wings, then the emo/goth kids wearing too many clothes on a hot day, then the guys in no t-shirts with a southern cross tattoo, then eventually you end up banning the people who don't really like any of the bands but want to pay $130 to get wasted, piss people off in the mosh and try to pick up and then who've you got left?

Like it or not Sophie the BDO has become less of a music based event and more of a rites of passage for teenagers and I can guarantee that as you get older and more and more people are younger than you at these things you'll probably get more and more pissed at more and more people until you get to the stage where even though you are offered a free ticket, you look at the line-up of bands you don't like, think about the hassle of getting there and dealing with all of those people and go nup, can't be bothered, I'll just sit at home and reminisce about Mudhoney in '91 like the old man that I am (or insert appropriate old time memory and correct gender).

                    What the underdog said.
If you ban under 18s for the BDO, you would have to change half the line up.
Sales of the Australian flags would plummett. What a ridiculous trend that is - almost all who where the flag as clothing, don't know the meaning of the day.

The first few BDOs I went to were over 18s only I seem to remember.

I hear they broke into the stables this year and a couple of horses got injured -Sport 927 are going ape.

Yep - Underdog nailed it. The way you speak of 13 year olds is the way I'd view having too many 22 year olds at festivals - fricken annoying (ie some of the Meredith crowd last year).
If I did get a free BDO ticket, It's walking distance for me so I'd go, see about two bands, and hang out in the lilypad like the last time I went a few years ago, hooking up with a group of similar-type people and paying the shitzen out of most of the crowd.

The only problem there if he didn't perform with full band, would be he would just do his DJ set of mixing up vinyl or cd's, which i find completely boring, even though i am an ex DJ....went to see him last time around with his band promoting his first record, and he blitzed live, the band went off [so to speak], the overall energy was just brilliant.

Have to say i'm not much of a fan of the new material, just sounds like any other housey / pop music, and he can't sing them live to save himself [unfortunatly], compared to his first, was groundbreaking in many ways, and he wrote lyrics to match up with instrumental backing tracks that actually suited his lack of vocal talents.

That list of four bands is probably more exciting for me than the entire line-up this year. I'd see a few bands as curiosities, watch Wagons as Hank would probably take the piss out of the crowd, and leave early (not as early as you did though).

I would have left then too but Neil Young played late.
The only reason I went really. Died Pretty and ECSR also played last year.
