Re: Recent Gigs & Upcoming ones

In fact, to demonstrate just how many songs they could have selected from and still had an awesome concert, the following are all songs that I would have loved to hear them play.

Even Better Than the Real Thing
    The Fly
    Acrobat
    Love is Blindness
    Kite
    New York
    An Cat Dubh
    Into the Heart
    Cry/The Electric Co.
    Miracle Drug
    Sometimes You Can't Make it
    Crumbs From Your Table
    Original of the Species
    Bullet the Blue Sky
    Running to Stand Still
    One Tree Hill
    Exit
    Unknown Caller
    Fez-Being Born
    Breathe
    Gloria
    I Threw a Brick Through a Window
    Rejoice
    Tommorow
    October
    Discotheque
    Gone
    Wake Up Dead Man
    Van Diemans Land
    Desire
    Hawkmoon 269
    God Part II
    All I Want is You
    11 O'Clock Tick Tock
    The Unforgettable Fire
    MLK
    40
    Window in the Skies
    Electrical Sotrm
    Hands that Built America
    The Saints are Coming

You could make almost two more complete set-lists using just those songs, and there is some real quality in there.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

Re: Recent Gigs & Upcoming ones

I went last night. It was awesome. I've also never been a fan of Jay Z and don't know much of his music but it was a very enjoyable supporting act. He was great. The only comment is the crowd was a little quiet all night. When Jay Z and Bono tried to get the crowd to sing along everyone was very quiet. It was quite awkward. For the people that went both nights was this the same on Wednesday? Glad I got in a good position standing too!

I'm interested to know what you would find frustrating about that?

I think you and I are on the same track re a closing song. I would have much rathered a song that you could get into, whatever that may be, than what they played. I thought it was a crap way to sign off.

Oh and if they'd played running to stand still, I just might have wet my pants.

You don't like stuck in a moment?

I agree with soupaman, i would have felt frustrated to finish with a song like Streets, that song makes you want more, it get's you right in the mood where's MOS has that end of a concert vibe to it, maybe i'm just used to hear it as the ending track having listened to most of the shows, but it's similar in that way to Love Is Blindless, Can't Help Falling In Love, "40", Wake Up Dead Man which have all been final songs on different tours.

There are quite a few songs in that list that will never be played live again, and a few that have never been played live in concert, Fez Being Born, Crumbs & Acrobat.

I may place a little too much importance on setlist order, but i feel Streets is the song you play as you near the end, but to announce that from here on it shall be awesome.

I mean this in that the lead up to Streets is usually a slower song which can be faded into one of the greatest intro's of all time. The intro to Streets is amazing, it gets the crowd exceptionately excited. Just watch the Boston dvd to see what i mean. The whole song just keeps getting better and better as it goes, and even the outro is amazing. It's a song that gets the crowd pumping and makes you hungry for more. It's not so much that it would be a bad song to end on, it's just that I think it's wasted as a closing song.

There's ending on a high, and then there is abandoning your momentum. Playing Streets last falls in the latter category.

I know where you are coming from. Finishing with a song everybody knows and loves is great, but I actually thought Moment of Surrender was a pretty good finish. It had that singalong chant aspect which was embraced on Wednesday, and it's a ripper song. Unfortunately coming off an average album and being largely unknown by the audience was a disadvantage.

Likewise with "The Unforgettable Fire", "Exit", "Window in the Skies" or "October".

Their worst good song. It's got a really clunky chorus (much like Crazy), the verse's are average and the bit which saves it is the "I was unconcious, half asleep, the water is warm 'till you discover how deep" bit. I don't hate it, but if I had to compile 3 20 song setlists of U2 songs without repeating any it wouldn't make it, with all the songs i have listed above, plus all the songs played in Melbourne, plus a couple of others not mentioned beating it.

Same goes with Red Hill Mining Town, never been played live, not even once in the songs lifetime ever since being recorded for the Joshua Tree, according to Bono he just cannot hit the high notes in that song.

I guess we're coming at it from different angles. No sweat, I can respect your opinion. My take is that I'd rather leave a concert wanting more, not feeling deflated because I have to face the fact that it's actually over .

I noticed on quite a few occasions that Paul went for a low note rather than as recorded. I guess 30 odd years of tearing your throat out has got to do some damage.

I have no idea what constitutes good opera singing, but when he did the Pavarotti part on Miss Sarajevo, I was very impressed.

Disagree, but like I said earlier, no problem accepting that your take is just different to mine.

Meredit Music Festival this Friday, will be struggling after 4 days at FRL the week prior.
Just picked up a ticket to Kyuss Lives in Radelaide, after the Melb gig sold out. Will be great to see them in a smaller (500) venue.

I agree with your take on the song, but hey, they HAVE to do this song when they play Australia though, surely? It would be like having a set in Sarajevo and NOT singing Sarajevo.

Was right in front. Maybe will post a photo...

Not the best quality -- lesson for all, remember to charge your phone (and your wife's iPhone) before going to gigs, otherwise you have to ration your battery all day and take all your shots in the first five minutes before the battery goes flat!

Got pretty much the same spot in 2006 Vertigo concert, have to say I enjoyed this one a LOT more though, for some reason (probably 'cos I wasn't actually working). Jay-Z was also pretty amazing (I'm a bit of a fan), and his band killed. Going to New York next week so Empire State of Mind was particularly significant personally (will be away for quite a while, close to half a year, actually, part work/part play, splitting my time between NY, parts of Spain with my wife's family, Italy, and then some time in Paris, so WOOFing may be somewhat limited, or maybe I'll be worse since I'm so far away). Oh, the apartment I'll be living in in NY is right next to Bono's apartment building on Central Park West. Funny that he's here, though, while I'll be there...

Anyway. Hope I come back to a Dogs Premiership.

Quite proud of this shot from the Vertigo tour, thought I'd throw a small thumbnail of it up here since we're talking about U2 and all. Got published in some magazine or other.
